Default Bruton Smith interview ends abruptly - 06-13-2009 , 09:31 PM

Bruton Smith has been trying to get a Cup race for Kentucky Speedway
since buying the race track from its original owners, who are still
appealing their lawsuit against NASCAR for not adding the track to
the Cup schedule.

Bruton's visit to ESPN's broadcast booth during tonight's rookie race
was brief; seemed to end quickly after he gave a couple short, rather
smart aleck, answers.

In response to the question "Where would a race for Kentucky come
from," meaning from within the current schedule. Smith said, "From
another track."

Play-by-play announcer Jerry Punch then, in a wordy roundabout way,
asked him to be more specific; ending with something to the effect of
"...what does that mean...", to which Bruton replied, "It means that's
the end of the answer."

In yet another followup to the same question, Punch did painfully get
Bruton to confirm it would be one of the Speedway Motorsports race
tracks, owned by Smith, rather than a NASCAR owned track.

But when Smith added something to the effect of, it will be an
International Speedway Corp (NASCAR) owned track when we see "...a
triple-wide on steeples coming down the highway..." the interview was
abruptly over. With that remark, Bruton was thanked for coming to the
booth and Jerry Punch quickly refocused his attention to the race in
progress.

I expected to hear about what it will take to get a Cup race for
Kentucky. What's going on, what's the plan. ESPN seemed to be offering
Smith a stage from which to make his case. However, Bruton apparently
did not appreciate or care to make the most of the opportunity.

What is a "triple-wide on steeples" anyway? LOL! Bruton Smith has one
very strange and uncomfortable personality.

Three words: WNBA vs ABL.

Never mind who had the better product. It's who had the money and
marketing.

Any NASCAR competitor would be doomed from the start, and that's even
without any sort of "if you are an owner, driver, or even a rear tire
carrier in this other series, consider yourself unwelcome in NASCAR
any time soon" policy.

Bruton will do things to spite the France family when he can, but he's
otherwise just like them; from the same mold.

He seems like the "Boss Hog" of auto racing to me. LOL

I think the only solution is the drivers/teams forming their own
league. They could all be equal partners, vote on policy, steer the
direction of top level stock car racing. Qualify for just one Cup
race, and you're a voting member for that season.

The solution must be something that will attract AND GAIN the
participation of the current top NASCAR stars.

If the teams get Daytona on their side, they have a chance. Otherwise,
it's IRL vs CART/ChampCar all over again.

I neglected to mention the major problem is NASCAR's sister
organization, International Speedway Corporation, owns most of the
tracks on the current schedule, including Daytona. And, of course,
that dilemma does not play well with the fans, who are fond of these
tracks.

The owners of NASCAR, the rat-dastards, without a doubt have a
monopoly.

Yeah, that worked out real well in open wheel racing now, didn't it?
