I hate to say it, but things are looking bad for race weekend.
The crews and cars are all on a tight schedule. With the crews
coming directly from Oz on charters, which I suspect have been paid
for, I doubt that CART has much flexibilty in their plans. Especially
since the sanctioning body has essentially run out of money.

Have there been any restrictions at ONT?

I am to arrive at noon on Thursday.

Thanks for the updates and links. Very useful.

No restrictions yet, that I know of. I'm flying out to Salt Lake
tomorrow night and they tell me to check back tomorrow to make sure of
the situation. Keep in touch with your airline. Here's a link to the
best local newspaper as far as local updates are concerned.

The two fires merged about two hours ago anbd the ash and smoke have
become *very* bad, the worst I've ever seen. The combined fire has
been estimated at over 50,000 acres and growing. Bring goggles and a
mask. A drug store or med supply should be able to set youup with
wht's called a TB mask. That's what the public health officials arte
recommending for everyone who is outdoors. I was just outside for
about 10 minutes without a mask or goggles and regret it now.

Enjoy your stay, it will definitely be unique.

Bud

My wife just brought up a possible major kink that hadn;t occurred to
me. Wheneverever there's a race here, hundreds (dozens at least) of
local police, Sheriff's deputies and and California Highway Patrolmen
are required for everything from traffic control to security and crowd
control at the track. As this fire has put a major strain on law
enforcement, there may not be any available for the race itself.
There's a major shortage of cops around here right now and they may
not be able to spare the cops for the race. I would think that may be
a factor in deciding whether to hold the race as scheduled.

To get an idea as to the shortage of cops and confusion going on here,
go to this link that Lorenzini provided:
http://www.incidentcontrol.com/

Click on Old Fire (that's actually the NEW fire in SB) and click on
CHP history for a log of their dispatch conversations. If you click on
Grand Prix fire, check out the map. If you look very closely, you'll
be able to make out the speedway at the bottom of the map and the
relation to the fire area. As it now ,the two fires have established
one continuous burn line along the mountains from east SB to La Verne
in LA county. That's gotta be close to 50 miles long.

Bud

It's Nice that the fire was named after the track, but in my
recollection all the "fire fighters" do is stand around and watch the
burn. The only time that anything is done is when a house is
threationed.
Good Lord I am a Movie Star, so there are 15 Units sitting around
that building. Instead of trying to put out the fire !!!

Very atute post there, dawg.
It's short, concise, and powerfully delivers 3 important points:

a) You're an idiot
b) you have no idea of what a wildfire is like. There's not much a group of
firemaen and trucks ca n do in the face of an 2 mile wide 80 fot high wall of
flame being pushed along at 60-70 miles an hour (yes, they do move that fast
or
fater).
c) you're an even bigger idiot than I originally thought when I started this
reply.

If not for the fire crews, half the southern part of this state would be in a
constant statee of reconstruction due to fire losses. Even the convict
firefighters do yeomans' duty and deserve the respect and gratitude of all of
us in the fire area for their efforts, risks they take, and occasional losses
they suffer.
make that four important points
d) you're an asshole

Bud

You left out e) he's a jerk, and f) people like him like to
vote to cut taxes because firefighters never do anything.

Being a winter person, I think I'd be happy in Canada. Oh sure,
I
like summer, but by August I'm usually tired of it and ready for
cool weather. I don't like rain, but it can snow till the cows
come home as far as I'm concerned :-)

You just described me to a T. I love Illinois! Mosquitos suck,
however!

One of the (few) upsides of living in deepest, darkest central
Pennsyltucky is the absence of skeeters. That's one thing aboot the
Canadjan prairies I don't miss.

We don't have many skeeters here, but we do haver lots of
rattlesnakes, black widows and a few scorpions.

The bats keep the skeeter population down around here, thankfully.
Lotsa caves and woods, bat heaven. On the other hand, we've got wild
black bear now! They're getting to be pretty common, too.

We're starting to get reports of them north of here (SW Mich.)
Spreading down from the northern L.P.

My parents live near Traverse City, and mountain lions have been
sighted
in the area.
They found a footprint in their driveway.

Not to mention the flocks of at least 100 wild turkey (I kid you not,
I've seen the pictures) that roam through their yard on a daily basis.

Foxes that play in the snow during the winter.

Coyote that come and feast on whatever they can find.

And the kicker, my dad ran into a momma bear and two cubs a couple of
years ago while walking in their woods. Luckily, she didn't see him
as
a threat.

Add the 300 inches of snow last year

And they want me to move up there.

Yeah, right.

Dude, that's livin'!

Things are getting downright goofy around here -- more and more people
moving in (5 new houses going up on my road right now... depressing),
while at the same time more and more wildlife. The bears, as mentioned,
and now I've seen 2 foxes inside a few months... it was years since I'd
seen one. Turkeys in herds (25+). Even the raptors are coming back.
Oh, and many confirmed Bald Eagle sightings. Yay!
