Default California VS Rockingham - 03-07-2006 , 11:53 AM

Personally I think that Rockingham races where allot better than Cali, I
mean, they can't even sell out the race at Cali, but the Rock was always
sold out what gives??

Mass insanity. The California race is miserably boring, and Rockingham was
always interesting. Maybe they were afraid that people would watch the race
in Rockingham and actually find it interesting---whereas in Calif, the
commercials are much more interesting than the actual race!

Who has been there....

I agree, and the coolest part was we could get on the train at Raleigh and
it would stop right outside the track. Outside of Darlington and Atlanta,
Rockingham was one of my favorite tracks to watch a race. It was just a
pain in the ass getting in and out of... that 7 miles to the city limits
took 3x longer than it did to go the rest of the way to Columbia.

First off, Lee here is right. Traffic out of The Rock during Cup weekends
was a nightmare. Getting there was no issue, if you went early enough. But
leaving, best to bring a cooler, yore gonna be parked a while. Took me 55
minutes the morning of, from driveway to parking slot. The return trip if
one stayed through the checkered flag, and the post race interviews, was
nearly 3 hours. (Going North up US 1 through Southern Pines toward Raleigh).

Second off, and purely from a technical standpoint, The Rock never sold out
(again) after they built the Hamlet highrise grandstand on the back stretch
there in the 1990s. That's "why" NASCAR said it lost its races, just as a
correction to the OP who stated that they always sold out. They always sold
out the "old original" front stretch and T1-T2 seats, but they could never
get the new backstretch high rise more than about half full after they built
them. I hate to sound "so" knowing, but I likely didn't miss 5 races in
total there from 1975 until they closed it. So, been there, done that,
bought a bunch of t-shirts.

I'm sorry I missed going to the Rock. Kyle petty used to run well there with
the old Yello Mello Machine during the early '90's....
