Diversity Program To The Max Can NASCAR get any more 'politically correct'? Marc Davis needed to be called something after his finish-destroying move vs Brendan Gaughan! *I'm sure BG is very sensitive to not use racial words since he was the only white boy on the Georgetown basketball team! 'They' would have had 'fun' beatin the snot out of him. But today, it doesn't cut both ways, especially in 'intolerant' NASCAR! Are u serious NASCAR, when blacks themselves call each other an epithet? CRU NASCAR.COM - CC Berry suspended for racial slur at Nashville - Jun 11, 2009 By The Associated Presshttp://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/bg/06/11/bgauhan.crew.chief... CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The crew chief for Nationwide Series driver Brendan Gaughan was suspended indefinitely Thursday for using a racial slur about rival driver Marc Davis, who is black. Bryan Berry apparently used the slur as he walked toward the Nashville Speedway garage to confront Davis during Saturday night's race. At least two people heard the slur and reported it to NASCAR, which investigated the claims before suspending Berry. Davis, 19, did not want to comment on the incident. "NASCAR has clear and precise policies covering all racing conduct and procedures," his father, Harry, said in a statement. "Mr. Gaughan and hiscrew actions do not merit response. NASCAR has resolved the issue." Rusty Wallace Inc., which owns Gaughan's team, said the organization has cooperated with NASCAR's investigation. "RWR requires all of our team members to adhere to the highest levels of personal conduct at all times while representing our organization and its partners," the team said. "We will accept absolutely nothing less." Berry and Gaughan were both angry after a pit road accident. Gaughan and Davis were going down pit road when Davis turned left into the garage in front of Gaughan, who ran into Davis' car. Berry got off the pit box to go to the garage to confront Davis, and leaned into Davis' car window to yell at him. NASCAR said there was no issue with the conversation between Berry and Davis, only with what Berry said before he reached the garage. -- Crusader |

I'm sure BG is very sensitive to not use racial words since he was the only white boy on the Georgetown basketball team! 'They' would have had 'fun' beatin the snot out of him. I got to thinking about this. In the days of yore, if a black guy stepped out of line in a sport like NASCAR, the some of the white guys would have beat him up while the rest quietly stood aside. But today, you can bet that if Gaughn's crew had tried to beat up Davis, Davis's crew (Braun Racing - white guys) would have stepped right up to defend their driver - doesn't matter that he's white or black, he's _their_ driver. So I don't see that NASCAR has any deep rooted issues with race right now. OTOH, what NASCAR does have (the folks in Daytona, at least) is a public relations problem, after the mess they made of first the Mayfield issue and then poor Carl Long's engine. So maybe they think that being loud about this will earn them some positive PR. John |
