Default Earnhardt/Wrangler question - 03-06-2006 , 07:14 PM

Have been looking back at his early years and noticed him and Wrangler first
partnered up in 1980 and pretty much stayed with him through the Bud
Moore years and obvioulsy the early years of Richard Childress racing, so
obvioulsy they were very loyal to Earnhardt. My question is when RCR went
to the all black GM Goodwrech sponsorship was it because Wrangler no longer
wanted to sponser them, RCR no longer wanted Wrangler, or RCR got too
expensive for Wrangler?

cause a black car was very intimidating. No really read this:

1988: The Man in Black Earnhardt had always been an aggressive, no holds bar
driver his whole career. Black had always seemed perfect for the driver
rather than the exact opposite colors of yellow and blue. But in 1988,
Earnhardt would change the look of his car, and as a result, the view of his
personality, forever. When GM Goodwrench took over the primary sponsorship
role of the RCR #3 Chevy, they insisted on a black paint scheme, and soon
enough, Earnhardt's newest nickname came up: The Man In Black.

That still doesn't answer my question, did RCR dump Wrangler or did Wrangler
decide they no longer wanted to be a part of RCR?

nobody ever drops a sponsor.

wrangler got tired of being associated with the dirtiest driver in racing
history. and they felt they had had enough of nascar.

I think it was more along the lines of GM just offering a LOT more
money to RCR than Wrangler.
That could be interpreted either way too.
Example: GM goes to RCR and says we'll give x amount of Dollars to put
ourname on the car.
RCR dumps Wrangler scenario: Ooh look at all the GM money
Bye Bye Wrangler.
Wrangler dumps RCR scenario: Ooh look at all the GM money,
we can't compete with that! Bye bye RCR.

..

They do if someone else offers more money and comes with factory support.

Sure it does. GM got what they wanted. A black car with GM plastered on
the hood and read quarter panels. Had to have paid butt loads more than
Wrangler would have ever considered. I think by then also a 4 or 5 time
champ.

What year did Wrangler sponsor DE's car in the all-star race? I still have a
T-shirt with that color scheme, saying something about "return of the classic"
or something like that...
