Something Ed missed there (maybe for space, not for lack of knowing)
is that back in 1969 the deal was Ford versus Dodge versus Chevy.
No-one really gave a damn who was driving (except maybe the Petty
fans) as long as their brand won.

Today NASCAR has gone to great efforts to get rid of brand loyalty
and change racing to being driver focused - people are Earnhardt
fans or Gordon fans or Stewart fans.

By doing so, they have unintentionally put the drivers in a position
of considerable power. When France Sr. ran the first Talladega race
with stand-in drivers no-one had ever heard of, it pretty much
worked out. But can you imagine France & Helton today, trying
to run a race without Earnhardt, Gordon, the Busch brothers,
Stewart, Edwards, etc? It would be a bigger debacle than the
6 car Indy F1 race a couple of years ago.

The single file stuff lasted what, twice, for about 30 laps total? Not
convinced it was really a driver's strike. Waltrip and Knaus on TWIN
said it's nothing new at 'dega and always happens with long greens.

Hmm, well, not to contradict Mikey unnecessarily, but he doesn't
exactly have a great reputation as a truthful man (just ask him
about drinking and driving); and I can remember Bobby Hillin Jr
winning Talladega, and most every race in between, and I don't
recall ever seeing a race like that. Even the spring race in
2001, when no-one wanted to be there, and they ran the whole thing
without a caution, wasn't like that.

That is an easy thing to fix, NASCAR should make a new rule that no
groups larger than 2 cars can single up at any time on the track.
That's what we need - another rule.

Mike, I just don't think you appreciate Tim's sarcasm.

Ugh! That explains that buzzing noise that went over my head...
