| Pretend your big wheel at Dodge and you're watching the race.........they stick a mic in Bill's face after a great run and he does what he did. Would you be pissed? It's not like the 9 and 19 get air time like that very often.......... |

We have basic differences in what we believe sponsors expect. In the past decade drivers like Gordon have forever changed the landscape in thar reguard IMHO. What main sponsors pay for a year now is 10-15 million. That's a far cry from what it was in the past..... Winning is the ultimate for a sponsor in terms of exposure, but beyond that they want as much driver face time on TV as they can get. Elliott had not only he chance but IMHO the obligation to give the customary interviews. Yes they are drivers first..........but they are also spokesman and if they can't carry that off then sponsors will take their money elsewhere or demand a driver change. |
|
Sure in the case of former champions and top notch teams they will look the other way most of the time but the trend is that sponsors have more and more power in who teams hire for a driver and how the person acts. It's nearly as important to sponsors as on track performance is. |

Rappy, you're letting your dislike of BE cloud your judgment. ;-) |

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Mikey Waltrip is a "sponsor whore" because he doesn't miss an opportunity to promote his sponsors. |

well have been his last best chance to win the last race of his career (and it's beginning to sound like people are starting to suspect the 12 team of something fishy) and doesn't appear to be all gleeful about the Dodge Dealers Dodge having such a great run, and he's shortchanging his sponsor. Just can't win... |

the first Winston Million and is the sport's most popular driver in terms of fan polls. His career pretty much speaks for itself. DE didn't always go on and on about the Goodwrench Chevy -- in fact, I'm not sure that he even mentioned his sponsors by name when he won the Daytona 500 -- and no one really got up in arms about that. BE, JG, RW, TS, the Labontes are breathing the rarefied air of being past champions and their mere presence does as much sponsor advertising as anything they could say. Pretend your big wheel at Dodge and you're watching the race.........they stick a mic in Bill's face after a great run and he does what he did. Would you be pissed? Probably not. That car got plenty of TV time that day because it was pretty much the best car on the track. The camera is right on the big "Dodge" logo on the front of his firesuit. Him saying the words "Dodge Dealers Dodge" isn't going to make that much difference. |

run" is a matter of opinion. Last week, BE had the fastest car but he lost on what amounted to a gas mileage race. Maybe he subscribes to the "second place is just the first loser" theory. It's not like the 9 and 19 get air time like that very often.......... Beg to differ. They've both had some strong runs recently, there's focus on BE because of the speculation that he might retire, and Mayfield's been the bridesmaid so often here lately that they've gotten plenty of TV exposure. |

I've stayed out of this thread until now, but I think my past postings show I fall on the side of "sponsors have too much power." Major advertisers don't have any say in who edits the magazines or newspapers in which they advertise; why should they necessarily have as much power as they do over who drives the car on which they advertise? |
