Saw that, and I can't figure out what's going on there. Did
Ask.com ask Yates to be let out of part of their sponsorship
deal, and the replacement sponsor wants Darnell? Has Labonte
privately told Yates he wants to retire, and Yates is auditioning
a replacement for next year?

If Labonte wanted to get a ride I'm sure he could - he has the
past champions provisional, and all the guys who've won the
championship more recently are way up in the points, so he's
effectively guaranteed to start.

Hall of Fame Racing would like to keep Bobby Labonte as its NASCAR
Sprint Cup driver and likely will not be affiliated with Yates Racing
next year, team co-owner Tom Garfinkel said Monday. The organization
signed Ask.com as a sponsor and Bobby Labonte as a driver in January
for the 2009 season and then landed a deal with Yates Racing for Yates
to field the cars. Seven of the final 12 races were unsponsored, and
Yates Racing has opted to put Erik Darnell in the #96 Sprint Cup car
instead of Labonte. Garfinkel, in a phone interview, said his
organization is still in discussions with Ask.com for next season but
doesn't anticipate the Yates Racing relationship to continue. The
organization is looking for other teams to partner with and is in
discussions with other sponsors as well, Garfinkel said.

Ah, well that explains that. Thanks for the info :-)

The question is what happened to BL that caused the drop in performance so
quickly. Terry at 45 was still competitive.
Any ideas?

Much as it pains me to say so, Terry was driving Hendrick Motorsports
stuff up until the end!

Guess y'all know by now that BL got a ride in the #71, so his
consecutive starts of 568 will continue, since he's got the most
recent PCP to fall back on. CRU
Apparently not. Since the driver change was made after the race
entry deadline, Labonte isn't eligible for the PCP (as I recall,
the same thing happened to his brother a while back).

OTOH, Gilliland has had no problem qualifying for races on speed,
so I think Labonte has a high likelyhood of continueing his
streak.
