Default Gas mileage - 05-08-2009 , 01:14 PM

All this chatter about fuel efficient street cars is baloney. You'all
talk that we need a fuel efficient car - but you're not gonna buy one!
You want the dirty unwashed masses of people to buy one. Well guess
what, they don't want one! You know why? 'Cause they can do math! (or
own cars with computers that do math)

F'r instance, say you drive 15,000 miles a year and get 20 mpg at
$2.50 a gallon (using easy numbers). So your annual fuel bill is $750.
Wow. So you buy a little boring car that gets 40 mpg and you double
your gas milage. You save $750 a year. Wow. How amazing. And how much
does the little pea popper cost? And the insurance? And if you get in
a wreck, you die if you get hit by a larger car. Wow.

My car has a twin cam V-8 develops 310 bhp and gets 17 mpg highway.
It puts a smile on my face. I use an electric bicycle to run short
errands and it makes me smile, too.

And the thought of the rest of the dirty unwashed masses driving
around in little pea poppers that get 50 mpg makes me smile, too.
Because there's only so much gas out there, and they're saving it for
me!

well you put it quite bluntly, but that is exactly why no one will buy
one. I personally drive a car with a 3.4L v6 that gets around 18-20
mpg (25 if i stretch it), but when i push that pedal down there's no
hiding that grin when you fly by a rice-rocket. This weekend I will be
purchasing a jeep with a 4L inline 6 which probably will get around 18
mpg or less, but still hauls ass, can tow anything i will need, and is
fun to rip off road. Gas mileage is not a concern to me, i've looked
into insurance, and for me to drive even something like a cavalier is
100 bucks a month more for me (remember i'm an 18 year male...), let
alone a gas sipper pea pod which would be closer to 200 a month more
for me, because of just what you said, in an accident, the car will be
a write off, and I would most likely suffer major injuries. A truck,
large sedan are much cheaper on insurance, and the piece of mind that
come with them knowing that i'll be safe in a collision are priceless.

I bought my 4-year-old Grand Cherokee Limited last year just before
gas prices skyrocketed - but I love the V8 power and how safe I feel.
Since I usually don't put even 2K miles on a car during a year, the 14
mpg isn't that big a deal for me. If I were younger, I'd definitely
be doing my weekend errands around town on a scooter or moped. LOL.

My Yukon gets around 12 mpg around town & about 19 on the hwy. It's big,
it's safe, and it's good looking, The only real problem I have with it is
the task of having to scrape an Aveo out from inside the wheel wells every
other month or so......; )
My wife just loves her Grand Cherokee LTD too. I just wish it came
"biggie-sized".

Those Aveos are pesky little critters, aren't they? LOL.

You're not going to do any flying past a rice rocket with that
3.4l...or anything else you can get with 4 wheels.

(rice rocket = Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, etc).

lol And the Echos (toyota) and the Prius...etc How about those
street-bound golf carts, SmartCars I think they're called. Saw one on
the road near my house a couple of months ago. I swear, that one would
lose in a wreck between it and a Yugo.

I'm still lovin my 4Runner I picked up around Christmas - sales were
slumpin, $4 a gallon was still on everyone's mind, so my Toyota dealer
was happy to see me come in and ask for a maxxed out V8 4x4 4Runner
Limited model. It compares quite well with the GX470 and was much less
$. And was less than the PoS Hummer H3 lemon that it replaced.
Granted, the lemon was an H3 Alpha and had more HP...but my T4R gets
me about 19mpg when I am nice to her (very good considering all V8 4x4
4Runners are AWD) and is a very nice ride IMO.

http://tinyurl.com/opubcq (shot of my Runner at T4R.org)

I'll buy an electric vehicle when they can go 400 miles between
charges while towing one of my boats - or 200 miles while towing my
race car. ;-)

ahh i guess we have different terms, i'd call those crotch rockets, a
rice rocket being a civic, accord, early model corrola, or just about
any 4 banger city kids think look cool with a giant spoiler and fart
can coming out the back.

I'm glad to hear that lots of people here have jeeps...I plan on
buying a 99 cherokee sometime today or tomorrow with the 4L straight
6.

Ah - I've heard them called "ricers", but not "rockets". Rocket
is a peculiarly inapt name for such a car.

IMHO it's all in the form of delivery.

Battery technology is seriously lacking and the R&D side is seriously
underfunded.

My guess is that "we" need something that combines roadways with power-
lines whereby we get the juice from the road to power the vehicle.

Induction?

Magnets?
