Default Good! Bobby Labonte in #71 for 7 races... - 09-03-2009 , 04:41 PM

Bobby Labonte will drive at Atlanta in the Pep Boys 500 after all.

After Labonte was dismissed from his driving duties for seven of the
remaining 12 races in the No. 96 Yates Racing Ford, the 2000 Cup champ
has agreed to pilot the No. 71 Chevrolet for TRG Motorsports in those
seven events starting this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Soooo...David Gilliland who had been piloting the underfunded team gets

Look, the 71 is destined to be one of those left to the curb or forced to
arca after the 4 car/10 team league goes into effect, so let Gilliland drive
the underfunded machine to close out the season, ok?

Better driver: Labonte. The equipment isn't competative, just like the 96.
Makes no diff, other than
tossing someone to the curb, just like Terry did at Indy just to get the
Champions provisional.

Labonte is one of my favorite drivers out there, but having said that,
I think he does need to hang it up. I blamed the last couple of years
he was with JGR on the equipment, but then Yeley did a bit better, and
then Ky Busch kicked butt, all three drivers with the same crew
chief.

Maybe Labonte just lost his focus and drive. Perhaps he doesn't take
chances. I heard someone say a while back, probably here, that he
doesn't like a loose setup like the successful drivers have used
lately.

Feel better now!

Dirt Bike Crash Knocks Elliott Out of Race at Home Track

This is becoming the week of living dangerously for Sprint Cup
drivers. First Carl Edwards broke his foot playing Frisbee and now
Bill Elliott has cracked three ribs riding his dirt bike.

“It was just a freak deal,” Elliott said. He said although he probably
could have raced in pain, he decided to step out of the Wood Brothers
Ford for this weekend’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway because he
didn’t want to jeopardize the team’s chances of running well in the
Pep Boys Auto 500.

“I just decided that those boys had worked so hard on the car it
wouldn’t be fair for me to have a problem and mess them up,” Elliott
said.

David Gilliland, who lost his regular ride to Bobby Labonte, will
drive in Elliott’s place this weekend.

“He runs good at Atlanta, so they should be OK,” Elliott said. “And
I’ll be back in the car for Kansas.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- David Gilliland, who earlier this week was replaced
by Bobby Labonte for seven races at TRG Motorsports, will attempt to
qualify a fourth Sprint Cup car at Joe Gibbs Racing for three of the
final 12 events, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Friday.

Gilliland will compete at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, Texas
and Homestead-Miami in a car sponsored by Farm Bureau.
