I don't know if Ed has checked the ratings books lately, but NASCAR's
days of being able to just decide when the broadcast would be are
gone, if they were ever here. You can't expect television networks to
devote a whole day to a sporting event, unless its the Super bowl, and
they don't even do that.

No, you've misunderstood his intention. He's saying, if you know
it's going to rain, screw the live broadcast and just run the
race. Let the TV show it on tape delay.

This is an excellent idea for those times when you know that rain
will happen (for instance, when a frontal system is approaching).
Instead of sending the fans home unhappy after sitting in the
rain all day, they get to see a race. And instead of the TV folk
wasting a whole afternoon with filler, and then screwing up their
Monday schedule, they'll get to broadcast a race during the time
slot they intended to - and most of the audience probably won't
even realize it's on tape delay.

John

So if it is expected to rain Saturday night in Bristol, TN they should run
the race at 11AM in front of empty stands? Why would any fans buy any
tickets after that? And why would the TV sponsors buy any ad time? And
would the drivers and crews and everyone else be required to be ready to
race hours before the race is scheduled just in case?

There are quite a few flaws in your plan. Outdoor sporting events do get
rained out. Sometimes lightning and sometimes high winds also. Not to
mention the occasional forest fire or hurricane. And sometimes a bunch of
nutters hijack some planes and crash them into buildings so that all
sporting events get postponed. And you never know if one of these years the
dire predictions of a flu epidemic may really come true. Got plans for all
of that in your bag of tricks?

Heck, even D-Day was delayed a full day by weather and look how well that
turned out. Nobody complained then.

Good point. We have this same discussion every year but it is still fun to
play along.

They would never race in the rain under any circumstances. The most they
would do would be to follow the pace car around to get the laps in and the
race counted. It would look a whole lot dumber than simply running the race
on the next available day.

It is one of those ideas that has some good points but never goes anywhere.
I remember one some years ago about how nice it would be to have one of
those heart shocking machines in every public place. And a medical
professional to go with it? Or would each and every employee be trained to
recognize when it was needed and apply it properly?
It gets kind of impossible, which is what goes wrong with most brilliant
ideas.

If something goes wrong with an idea, then it probably wasn't brilliant in
the first place.

Not really a problem, most fans show up hours before the event
anyway. You just put it on the ticket: in the event of adverse
weather, the promoters reserve the right to start the event at
any time after 11am (or whenever - for a night race you might
say 3pm or something like that. You wouldn't be able to be sure
it would rain more than 4 or 5 hours ahead of scheduled starting
time anyway). And if it doesn't rain and everyone shows up early
anyway, so much the better for the souvenier sellers and the
track concession stands.

Are you kidding? The TV sponsors would love it. Now, they've got
to deal with the possibility of a rainout, and having virtually
no-one watch their ads. With this plan, they know the race will
be on, either live or tape-delay, and their ad will be seen by
the intended audience. It'd definately be a good deal for the
TV advertisers.

As opposed to laying around in their motorhomes trying to pretend
they're not bored silly waiting for the race to start? I doubt
you'd find many crews that wouldn't prefer to get going with the
race as early as possible.

Wrecks don't make a race interesting. Racing makes a race interesting.
NASCAR could start races earlier if there's a threat of rain. The network
could then show the race (tape-delayed) in it's allotted time slot.
Ticket paying fans might disagree with you.

Problem solved.

Not even close.

It's just amazing how much bitching goes on, and how many "ideas" sprout up,
from people who just sit at home and watch the race. As if they are so
terribly inconvenienced.

It is to have races that are interesting enough for people to watch.
Interesting that enough people watch to convince companies to spend
millions
of dollars to advertise their products on race cars and telecasts.

Racing on rainy days isn't going to help that situation out one iota..
Maybe not, but that's not the point. It probably won't hurt, either.
My point was that NASCAR has to improve its product. Racing in the rain
might not be the answer, but the only way to find that our for sure is to
try it.
And one thing I know for sure is racing in the rain is not going to increase
the liklihood of someone getting killed. They will be going too slow.
