You can't expect television networks to devote a whole day to a sporting event, unless its the Super bowl, and they don't even do that. No, you've misunderstood his intention. He's saying, if you know it's going to rain, screw the live broadcast and just run the race. Let the TV show it on tape delay. This is an excellent idea for those times when you know that rain will happen (for instance, when a frontal system is approaching). Instead of sending the fans home unhappy after sitting in the rain all day, they get to see a race. And instead of the TV folk wasting a whole afternoon with filler, and then screwing up their Monday schedule, they'll get to broadcast a race during the time slot they intended to - and most of the audience probably won't even realize it's on tape delay. Had this group been around, there would have been plenty.. Good point. We have this same discussion every year but it is still fun to play along. They would never race in the rain under any circumstances. The most they would do would be to follow the pace car around to get the laps in and the race counted. It would look a whole lot dumber than simply running the race on the next available day. It is one of those ideas that has some good points but never goes anywhere. I remember one some years ago about how nice it would be to have one of those heart shocking machines in every public place. And a medical professional to go with it? Or would each and every employee be trained to recognize when it was needed and apply it properly? It gets kind of impossible, which is what goes wrong with most brilliant ideas. |

So if it is expected to rain Saturday night in Bristol, TN they should run the race at 11AM in front of empty stands? Why would any fans buy any tickets after that? |
|
And why would the TV sponsors buy any ad time? |
|
And would the drivers and crews and everyone else be required to be ready to race hours before the race is scheduled just in case? |

Wrecks don't make a race interesting. Racing makes a race interesting. NASCAR could start races earlier if there's a threat of rain. The network could then show the race (tape-delayed) in it's allotted time slot. |

Problem solved. |

In article <~M~@gmail.com> wrote: It is to have races that are interesting enough for people to watch. Interesting that enough people watch to convince companies to spend millions of dollars to advertise their products on race cars and telecasts. Racing on rainy days isn't going to help that situation out one iota.. |
