they won the sun belt with a 5-6 record, but the statement that a team NEEDS
a winning record is incorrect. utterly so.

Though frankly I am not sure what would happen if a conference
champion had a winning record and the bowl game had an automatic bid
for that particular conference champion :-)

Assuming you meant "did not have a winning record", then they do not
qualify for a bowl game and the bowl with the automatic bid gets
to select someone else.

John

Yes, you have to have a winning record....unless a conference with a
bowl tie-in has no teams with a winning record. Then if a team is 6-6 it
gets the automatic bid. I assume if there is no 6-6 team, the bowl can
select an at-larhe team.

The other John

Correct. In 2001 they got nailed by Colorado State in the New Orleans
Bowl. Don't know this, but I am guessing either no other teams
qualified, and/or they won the Sun Belt and thus the tie-in factor
overruled the winning record thingie.

It is absolutely correct in regards to at-large bowl bids.

I changed nothing. I simply pointed out the exception to your
(conveniently snipped) statement.

The official rule seems to be (and you can look though www.ncaa.org)
that a team must win 6 games against Division I-A opponents (as opposed
to NAIA opponents and/or NCAA Division I-AA or lower) and must have a
winning record to be eligible for a bowl game. Theoretically a team
could play as many as 14 games before bowl season if they played in
Hawaii (or somewhere else outside the continental US) and played a
pre-season classic and also played a conference championship. (I can't
recall any team playing more than 13 non-Bowl games in a season,
however...)

The NCAA made an exception in 2001: a team only needed a 5-5 record or
better with no more than 1 win over a Division I-AA opponent. That was
because virtually every team had a game cancelled after 9/11. This
year, several games were postponed because of hurricanes in the
southeast, but these were made up in November and December.
