who was it that decided to cut out the corkscrew and the keyhole and
replace it with the chute?

NASCAR? track owner? drivers?

Dunno if it was Smith's idea or NASCAR's, but you're correct that
he had to make changes or NASCAR would not have continued the
event. Sears Point has never been a suitable track for Cup racing,
everyone knows that the only reason the series goes there is that,
when Riverside closed, it was the least bad track available (and,
with NASCAR's longstanding infatution with California, not having
an event there wasn't acceptable to them).

NASCAR would be a lot better off if they dropped both Sears Point
and Fontana, and simply gave up on California.
