Default Ideas for qualifying - 04-30-2007 , 03:55 PM

1. Have qualifying heat races. We have them at Daytona, and they seem
to be popular. Why not everywhere? Have qualifying, as normal. The top
20 cars get in on their time. All others race their way in through a
short heat race (say, 5% of the race distance--like 9 laps at
Talladega or 25 laps at Bristol). Top 23 finishers race on Sunday, the
rest go home.

2. Set the starting grid in the reverse order of finish from the
previous race. Those that failed to finish the previous race, along
with those wishing to race, post qualifying laps. The fastest from
those go on to fill the number of spots from the DNF finishers from a
week ago. For example, 10 cars failed to finish the Joe Blow 500. The
33 that did are lined up in reverse order of finish for the Qwerty
500. 1st=43rd, 2nd=42nd, so on. The ten cars that didn't finish the
Joe Blow 500, along with all those wishing to race in the Qwerty 500,
would then post laps. The fastest 10 would then be lined up in
positions 10- to 1.

3. Have a game show. Person with highest score gets the pole. 44th
place on back will receive fine parting gifts, such as a salad shooter
and a lifetime supply of HeadOn*

*Apply directly to the forehead.

4. Fastest 43 cars race. 44th place in qualifying would receive 31
points, as if they finished 44th in the race, and so on down the line:

45th 28 pts.
46th 25 pts.
47th 22 pts.
48th 19 pts.
49th 16 pts.
50th 13 pts.
51st 10 pts.
52nd 7 pts.
53rd 4 pts.
54th 1 pts.

If more than 55 drivers attempt to qualify, then 55th place on back
would not receive any points.

This would take away the advantage from someone just barely making it
in on time, then parking or wrecking it at the beginning of the race.
Instead of getting 34 points over his DNQ opponents for his poor
showing, he'd only get 3.

Uh, dude, this is how it's done today. In fact, it's been done
this way for years. That's why car #55 has 167 points, even tho
it's only been in one race.

I thought the chase was pretty much a lousy idea. Normalizing the
points at 5000, essentially, giving someone something they didn't earn
in the interest of television ratings. I still think it is the most
unfair selection process in all of sport.

Now you want to award points to someone that wasn't even in the race?

WoW!!!!

Only for owner points, though. They don't give any for driver points.
That's why Michael Waltrip is in 6,000,000,000+th place in the driver
standings right now, and why other drivers, such as Jeremy Mayfield,
David Reutimann, etc, have fewer driver points than they do owner
points.

I prefer to go the other way, and only award points down to around 30th. No
need to drag out a rolling wreck if there's nothing to gain.

Actually - that is a good point. All this tony babble and nascar itchy
finger over the 'debris cautions' ................... so get those tape &
sheet_metal flailing pieces of shit off the track !!

Well yeah, but you said "ideas for qualifying". They use owners
points for qualifying (for provisionals, order of the draw for
qualifying, etc). Drivers points don't come into qualifying.

And that's only OWNER points. The driver doesn't get any awarding of
non-qualifier points. How much further in the season can a driver go
with NEGATIVE points? Hell, all of us here COMBINED have more points
than Mikey! :O
Over in the mod group I made a post on that very topic. The gist
of was the next few races are at tracks which have not been kind
to Waltrip in the past couple of years, so the odds of success
don't seem to be with him. The next track where Mikey's been
fairly good is Sonoma (yeah, that was a surprise), so depending
on how many road course specialists show up with good cars, he
might have a shot there. Next good chance after that will be
the Firecracker.
