Still without power out at my place, though we have it at work. We
lost it like at 2:30 in the afternoon Thursday. No power = no power
to run the well, either. That is not a good thing.

Hope Dr. G is holding up.

That sucks Al :-(

We lose our power a lot in the boonies, though usually for hours
rather
than days! Everytime we have weather forecast that may include
enough
wind, lightning, or ice to bring trees and branches down on
powerlines,
I run the bathtubs full of water, just for toilet tank refills. It's
come in handy more than once!

We filled up 2 of our bathtubs full of water, boy are we glad we did
for
flushing. I found some ice about 20 miles south of Charlottesville,
which kept us and the neighbor going. We had 2 flats of bottled
water,
down to one now. Poor little Jake though, he isn't sleeping well. it
is cool enough outside, but with the dead calm the past 3 nights, it
just isn't carrying into the house. The gas grill is getting a
workout,
and the Smokey Joe charcoal grill runs alot to keep a kettle of hot
water going.

The worst part is they have had power 1/4 mile from us for the past 2
days.

The only good thing is my wife has relented and will allow me to now
buy
the backup power system I wanted to buy all along. A bit too late for
this one, and hopefully it will never need to be used.

I did get to see the last 50 laps or so of the race yesterday. I
thought
that was some pretty hard racing between the 19 & 12. As a Newman fan
I
was pleased, though I was having a problem understanding all these new
rules that suddenly appeared while I was away from TV/computer.

Well hopefully this evening will find the power back on at your
household.

On a related subject, there's been a rumor flying around here for about
a week that the big eastcoast blackout started at the Conesville power
plant about an hour northeast of where I live.... American Electric
Power is denying their plant caused it, but it was the first to shut
down, around 1:15 that day... the subsequent crashes cascaded out from
it.

That sucker has the tallest stacks on it I've ever seen. You can see
them from 16 miles away -- and that's highway miles, not as the crow
flies.

From what I understand we missed that one by mere seconds because some
engineers somewhere were paying attention and were able to divert power
to another grid. Otherwise it would have reached further into the south.

After riding around town today I saw how lucky I am that my power was
restored in 44 hours. I feel for Al, especially since he is in a rural
area. There are thousands in the center of Richmond who still are in the
dark. :-(

This would not happen to you, would it Ms. G?:

Thanks for the well wishes. The power is back on! Never thought I
would be so happy to simply be able to turn on the faucet and have water
come out.

My wife drove around in Richmond today, she says there is a lot more
damage there than out here. She saw hundred year old oaks snapped like
twigs. I went out and scouted the lines out here to see where they were
down and gave the power company the exact locations last night.
Apparently that helped (or so I would like to think ), because this
afternoon our power came on.

Glad to have our power back on now though. Now I can catch IWC and
Totally NASCAR, and donate excess bottled water, some ice, and some
extra flashlights to friends at work who probably won't be getting their
power back any time soon. One gal at work told me all the power poles
on her block were down, at least 3 in her backyard alone. She expects
to be out at least another week. I can't imagine how bad it must be in
Hampton Roads.

I am very thankful to have my power back. Having a well sucks without
any way to get the water out.

I'm still amazed we didn't lose ours, as close as we were to the
apparent epicenter ;-)

My hubby told me last night that the gentleman who owns the company he
works for was told be can expect to be out of power for another 2
weeks!! I believe he lives around Petersburg.

We lost our power for 5 days during the blizzard of '78. I can't
imagine losing it for 2 freakin' weeks!!

Heck no -- we have to read our own meters.

Now, if you're talkin' the UPS guy... ;-)

Yay for Al! :-)

This morning, they had a tornado on the north side of Richmond. 12000
more homes without power. Flooding at some major intersections. Sort
of makes one seriously start repenting I haven't seen any of those
guys with the big signs yet, but maybe they got blown away by the winds.

A co-worker told me today that she was told it would be 6-8 weeks before
she would get power. She lives near the Airport and is in an area were
homes are spead out.

The tornado touched down about 1/4-1/2 mile west of the FMC meeting
place shopping center. And that is probably less than a mile from the
track itself.
