What's up with Benson?!! Two in a row. I think Toyota is going to be
very competitive in their first Cup season. Maybe even Waltrip will win a
few :-).

Nope. unfortunately for Toyota even if they have competitive equipment they
have guys that won't be competitive in them.

One of the columnists in NASCAR Scene this week was discussing the
fact
that there are a bunch of openings for drivers in Cup next year and
only one available driver currently from cup (Vickers.) The idea was
that teams may be bringing back guys like JB, Mike Skinner, Ward
Burton, maybe Ricky Craven, etc: guys with cup experience not doing
Cup
now. Food for thought, eh?

I'd be surprised to see it myself. There's lots of talent in the Busch
series that would be better money spent. The guys that are out of Cup
today
are out for a reason. A lot of them were nice guys - fan favorites,
but
they had their crack at it and they never set the track on fire. Much
better to spend the money on the Busch guys and bring them up through.

Well, does Toyota want a blank slate or some experience?

Good point. Considering they took on Mouth Waltrip and Dale Jarrett, it
does appear that experience (regardless of talent) is what they're after.
Toyota just wants to sell more Toyotas. Mike Waltrip is best for that.
These companies could care less about winning just whether or not more
product is sold-as it should be.

No argument there, but I'll contend that Mikey's value (in exposure = $ to him
*and* $ to his sponsor) and his persona as a paid, loud-mouth, shill increased
after he went to DEI and increased SIGNIFICANTLY after he won. Before that he
was but a blip on the marketing radar.

Has JB dropped off the earth or is he still rehabing from his

a
cinch for a sponsor.
I'm pretty sure that he lost the sponsor/ride before his
short track accident. IIRC, Kyle Busch was going to
help him in the next truck race prior to the supermod wreck.

Still rehabbing, I beleive.

Unfortunately, in today's NASCAR driving skill is only part of
what's needed. It's easier for a big-time team owner (like a
Childress or a Roush) to pull in a sponsor than a small guy,
because the big teams can offer more. And the big-time team
owners all want young 18 and 20 year old drivers in Trucks and
Nationwide, because it's "development". It makes it very hard
for an older driver to find a well-sponsored ride.
