Default Kirk Shelmerdine - 02-19-2006 , 08:33 PM

I had to work during the race...could only see a handful of the
infractions, etc.

Couldn't help but notice Kirk Shelmerdine...who, if memory serves,
hadn't completed more than a handful of laps over the past two
seasons...and who hadnt finished above 40th during that time....ended
up 20th and on the lead lap.

Good news indeed. I hope the good luck continues for, perhaps the last
of the true owner/operator independents....

Robby Gordon finished 13th. He is every bit as much of an owner/driver that
Kirk is.

The difference is that Robby has John Menard (who may actually be the
richest human being involved in racing) and Jim Beam backing him. I'd wager
that Shelmerdine's bank account is just a wee bit smaller.

And you can't get much more independent than what he's doing.
Did you catch the mention they made about Shelmerdine being loaned money
for tires by a group of Earnhardt Sr. fans in the infield?
That's a skin-of-your-teeth operation.

I hope he succeeds.

Ok, so Kirk has a smaller budget. And kudos to him for what he accomplished.

Robby is still an independent owner/driver and finished ahead of the only
other owner/driver.

But Todd didn't race today.

Whatever happened to the BAM car? It's not like Morganthau went bankrupt.

And I think Kirk shoved it back in the face of the people who thought he'd
sell his spot in the field to Scott Riggs.
