Keith Jackson, Jackie Stewart Notes: Before 1974, the Daytona 500 was shown as a filmed (before 1972) or videotaped highlight package the following week on "Wide World of Sports." I have not nor will I include those announcers here. In 1974, ABC began the first live coverage (joined-in- progress) of the 500. Coverage was normally timed to begin when the race was halfway over. In 1979, CBS instituted the "flag-to-flag" coverage policy. On another forum, it is said that Walter Cronkite actually called the first Daytona 500 race in 1959 for CBS in a live telecast. This is as of now an unconfirmed claim that bodes research. Commentators listed are those who called the race, lap-by-lap, and the analysts in the booth. Hosts, non-booth reporters and pit reporters are not included. |
