The LFD on the pole? That's almost fair, let's set starting
positions by
last
years owners points. Let's not use this years point
standings, something
that
would make sense. Or draw a number out of hat which would
be the only
fair
way to do it since no one earned a starting position. And
if they are
going
to use points from a previous year, why use last years? Why
not use the
owners
points from 5,10,15 or 20 years ago. It makes as much
sense. NASCAR at
it
finest, rigged in favor of the big teams and big money.

It's been that way for yrs.

ummm, I thought whithin the last 2-3 yrs, the drivers lined
up according
to present point standings when qualifying was rained out...

Probably after the first 5 races since technically they are
still
using last years standings for the top 35 + Robby Gordon for
some
reason. Now THAT is the only thing suspicious.

Maybe I missed the memo on this, but they do still start 43
cars at Bristol,
right?

The question is: How do they determine starting positions
36-43? This years
points? Last years?

I would imagine that Texas Terry gets one for the champions
provisional, so
that leaves 7 spots.

If only there was somewhere a person could go to find this stuff
out, like some kind of information center that's accessible
somehow, hrmmm........

What happens if qualifying gets rained out?

If it is the first 5 races of the season, the previous season
OWNERS points are used:

#1) - Previous season Owner Points [position 1-35]
#2) - Race winners from the previous and current season not
already in the field
#3) - Past Nextel Cup Champions not in by 1 or 2
#4) - Current season Owner Points [Top 35][not in by rules 1-3]
#5) - Current season race attempts ties broken by current owners
points standings [not in by rules 1-4]
After the 5th race of the season, the current season OWNERS
points are used:
#1) - First 35 by current Owner Points
#2) - Last Years Cup Champ or the Event Champion if not already
in the field
#3) - Car Owners whose team has won in the previous and current
season not already in the field
#4) - Drivers who have won in the previous and current season not
already in the field
#5) - Past Nextel Cup Champions not in by 1 thru 4
#6) - Qualifying Attempts with Owners points as the tie breaker
#7) - Qualifying Order Position
(all above apply as long as the team was entered by the entry
deadline - usually 7-13 days before the race)

Although I was too lazy and unmotivated to look up the procedures, I did
know where to find them.

My previous comment in this thread was directed at Mike Smith, who seemed
to think that Robbie Gordon somehow didn't deserve to be included in the
starting field, yet gave no reason as to why not.
I have to admit I do not know the reason, although I never suggested there
was no reason. I don't much care really. The damn rules change so much
that it is hard to follow and this 35 starting position stuff is only a
year old now. I would just expect that RG got a starting spot because:

1. He is a regular this year who ran last year and would have a starting
position if he was in the top 35
2. He finished last year in the same spot he started Yesterday
3. Terry Labonte used a past champion provisional (position 43) and didn't
take up a 36-42 spot
4. There were no less deserving cars in that 36-42 area

And to the guy who said the "look it up", NASCAR never bends the rules, do
they? Lets see how consistent they are with the 24 on Tuesday
