His over-the-hill ass should retire.

Looks like he might fall out of the top 35 and have to qualify each
week if he doesn't watch out. He is only 349 points ahead of second
place. Its been a pretty bad year so far.

Nah, let him stay. I'm not a fan, but he seems like a nice enough guy,
and beyond that, he can damn sure drive a car. Plus compared to a lot
of the field these days, I kind of see him as an old guard. His
presence on the track is reassuring somehow... I'm sure at least a few
of you out there know what I mean.

I do wonder how long he'll stick around though. He's got the money,
he's got the legacy, and now he's got the family. And that's what I
think could change things. He's a smart man, and no matter his
dedication to racing, I think he's reaching a point where he knows his
contribution could be just about as great with him in a non-driver
role, and better for his family as well since he wouldn't be laying
his life on the line 36 weeks a year.

I'm curious what some of you think Jeff's future in the sport is. Not
talking championships and so forth, I'm thinking when (or if) he gets
out of the car, and if he does, what does he do next?

Me, I can see him running for another three, maybe four years. By then
his daugter's getting old enough that she's going to start developing
lasting memories, and I think he'll want to be around for as much of
that as possible (four or five is the earliest most people I know can
remember anything, albeit not much.)

I see two obvious choices for his future career, but I'm going to go
with him becoming part of the sanctioning body. I know that runs
counter to the precedent of other highly successful drivers like Petty
and Earnhardt, but I think Jeff's a slightly different breed and would
enjoy running part of the sport more than building a race team.

Oh... and you'll notice I didn't name the sanctioning body.

-Steven

My take is that the wife doesn't have to work, so why can't the kid
travel with poppa and momma like many other drivers' families do? If
he uses the child as an excuse to get out of the sport, it is lame at
best.

Hard to imagine, but the guy has been around forever (about 15 years ,
right JG fans?) and is still only 36! Heck, TS is 36 also, and is
just hitting his competitive stride in NASCAR. So, 36 is not old, but
JG has indeed been around a while!

Besides, if he does pull off the points title this year, he is that
much closer to the 7 titles record that so many envisioned for him
when he was dominating the sport back in the day (much like he had
done earlier in the season; good thing his luck has turned bad with
that big a points cushion, although that turns into a pumpkin in 2
weeks!!!) so I see him sticking around long enough to see if he can
pull it off!
Sandy
(already stressing about rumors that Tony will retire when his next
contract comes up!!! God, took me long enough to find another
favorite driver after Rusty got close to retirement, and he was around
a LONG time!!)

This cracks me up. Some of these "supposers" obviously don't keep up
with JG. He has said he doesn't want to race forever, and that he'll
quit when it stops being fun. When he quits driving, I see him in
some business venture related to racing, because he loves the business
side of racing (as well as the driving), but have no clue where that
might go.

As to travel - he's already bringing Ingrid and Ella Sofia along to
the tracks, so don't imagine that he won't continue to do that.

I suspect he'll quit racing before he's 45, but exactly when, I would
really have no basis for guessing, and neither does anyone else in
this group.

N.
