Is the Dover Monster trophy made of Concrete? Looks like plastic to me in
pics. Never bothered to watch anyone hoist it.

I think the Nextel Cup trophy is one of the best in any sport - it's
classy, finished beautifully, and the checkered flags represent a
winner. What's not to like?

Whoever wrote the captions for the trophies in the Maxim slideshow
seems to have some kind of resentment of race car drivers...probably
someone who never got out of bumper cars.

The fact that it's not an actual *cup*??

But I guess since the Super Bowl trophy isn't an actual bowl, I guess it's
ok, or at least it has company in it's incorrectness.

Except that the "Bowl" in Super Bowl, and other football games refers to the
stadium/game, and not the trophy. A "Cup" usually refers to an actual, if
not ugly and/or overly ornate, cup. Think America's Cup, Stanley Cup.

Then can you explain why sweepstakes winners get neither brooms nor pointy
sticks??

That's my take. It should be called the Nextel Flags Trophy, and the ending
run should be the Chase for the Nextel Flags mounted into a Paperweight. At
least the old trophy had some Cups on it. The truck and Busch series
trophies are Cups, why Nextel had to be so different....is well beyond me.

And I personally dig the clocks are Martinsville and the guitars at
Nashville. I get the regional tie-ins with the Elvis thing at Memphis, the
belt thing at LV, and so on, but find the clocks and guitars more fitting
than the rest for some reason.

regarding the Grandfather clock-

It is part of Martinsville rich history in furniture building. Furniture and
Textiles have long been part of the area economy. One of Hooker Furniture's
factories is located right there in town.

(Hooker is top of the line furniture-and often seen on "The Price is Right",
and usually way overpriced!)

The word "cup" used in the Chase/Nascar context has come to mean the
main trophy, the big prize, nothing more. You're being too literal ;-)
