Default MRN vs. PRN - 02-19-2006 , 12:28 AM

I replied to a post where someone was talking about Dick Brooks passing, and
I made the comment that MRN kicks PRN's ass.

Then, I get an email directly from PRN's engineer asking me for constructive
criticism, and I told him why I think MRN is better. Looking at what I said
now, I might have been a little harsh...........

He passed it on to Doug Rice and Mark Garrow, and Doug hits me back with a
big long email defending his guys and saying I hurt his feelings etc......I
felt kinda bad actually.....I'll put both emails at the end of this
post......the names and emails deleted to protect the guilty..........

Anyhoo, my opinion was that the PRN guys bumble through the race, and that
the MRN guys sound more professional and they flow better.

What do you guys think?

The PRN guys will be reading the opinions posted here I am sure, because the
engineer that got me in the email exchange reads it, and I can betcha he
will pass it on to Doug Rice and Mark Garrow too.......

Hello ***,

I must admit I haven't been gutted like that in a long time. But you are
definitely entitled to your opinion. You are correct; we do sound different
from MRN and that's entirely my responsibility. As the co-anchor and
president of PRN it's my responsibility to conduct the orchestra as I see
fit.

I'm extremely proud of all or our announcers and think that we tell the race
story in a colorful but complete way. I've always thought that personality
should be a part of any broadcast but never control the broadcast. With all
do respect to Barny Hall and Joe Moore and the rest of the MRN staff, guys
that I like and admire very much I wouldn't trade my team for any of them.

I hate it that you don't like our broadcast but I can assure you *** that
there is not a single time that we put on the headsets to conduct a
broadcast that we aren't prepared and passionate about our work. Just one
other item we don't have connections in "high places" to keep our jobs, I'm
from Salisbury which is not a lot different than Hickory and Mark is from
Vermont and our last names are not Smith or France.

I will give you credit that in the 80's we were not where we should have
been but that was also a long time ago. Hopefully you've given us listen
lately.

Thanks for note even though it was little rough to read and shoot a nice
hole in my Saturday.

Sincerely,

Doug Rice
PRN President

Of course you disagree with me, as you should. I speak only as a race fan,
and how it comes off to me as a listener with zero knowledge of the inner
workings of your profession.

You guys do a great job announcing races, MRN just does it better.

***,

Thanks for responding to my e-mail. I am coping this to PRN President Doug
Rice.

Safe to say that I disagree with you.

Growing up in the 70's early 80's, on Sundays in Hickory, NC, I went fishing
with my dad and other older relatives, and we listened to the race on a
little radio. When Bruton's bunch came on it was like, "who the hell are
these guys?"

The 2 main announcers, Mark and Doug, bumble and stumble all over each other
and sound like they are trying to tell "their" race story instead just
giving an accurate account of the action. Their attempt at adding color is
useless, because there is enough action already without "flash" and yelling.
I am sure they are both great people, but they sound like they are trying to
over do it, and they always sound like it's the first time they have ever
announced a race. They must be friends with someone high up.

MRN guys flow. It's obviously the culture, because they bring in different
announcers and it still flows. When following the action around the track
PRN guys will tell 4 different stories about 4 different things going on
with each turn reporter, where MRN will follow someone's lead for a lap and
let it transition to something else. Barny Hall is absolutely the best and
PRN can't be faulted for just how good he is. PRN just doesn't have the feel
that they let the action come to them and accurately report it, they try to
do too much and everyone is telling their own story instead of telling the
same story the say way as a team.

Just take a listen to this clip from their web site
http://dbserver.iscmotorsports.com/ISCadmin/SharedImages/MMFiles/MMFiles20/02_RaceDay.mp3

I think that somewhere in the engineering their voices all are made to
"blend" slightly so there is not as much of a contrast when going to
reporter to reporter and the possibility of the transition of voices not
being smooth. Am I sounding like a nit picking nerd?

Being the #2 bunch, these guys try too hard and to me the better quality of
MRN as compared to PRN is based solely on the flow and the teamwork of the
reporters. We all know Bruton and Humpy want to out do ISC.

The Indy guys just have no business announcing a race
whatsoever...............that one where the TV feed went out and we tried to
listen.........ugh

Just my humble opinion,

ANTiSEEN....

I was also sad to hear of the passing of Dick Brooks but you and I are
remembering two different announcers. The one thing I remember most of
Brooks' pit reports was the ones at the end of the race when he interviewed
the winning crew chief. He always said 'there's a whole bunch of happy
people down here'. Sure there are, they just won the race...

We would like to know what PRN does that you don't care for. We are alway
open to constructive criticism.

Thanks for listening...
