Default NASCAR - 05-04-2007 , 05:15 PM

"I am a NASCAR Widower"

It happens every year around our Anniversary, within two weeks of
Valentines Day my Wife Jan changes into her twin. She is a Gemini
(the twins) and has a mirror image twin living dormant inside of her.
During the winter months, she reads, talks with me, and plays with the
dog (our American Eskimo Puppy named Dale Jr.), but when speed week
starts at Daytona she changes as her twin takes control. When the
NASCAR Nextel Cup season opens, she plans her life around the weekly
event schedule. I am then an official NASCAR Widower for the next
nine months. I better start at the beginning.

It all began in the year 2001. My son Jeremy was thirteen years old
and watched a lot of cartoons, wrestling, and NASCAR races. My wife
Jan began to spend quality time with Jeremy and sharing in his
interests. Jan began watching Pokeman cartoons, watching WWF
wrestling every week, and watching the big NASCAR race every Sunday.
At first she was a passive watcher of all of Jeremy's interests, but
before long Jan became an active participant in the NASCAR race every
week. One day while working in my barn, I began to here loud noises
coming from the house. Wondering what is was, I crept closer and
closer to the Kitchen door. That's when it became audible to me. My
wife was actually yelling with passion for Sterling Marlin to pass one
of the other drivers and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to stand on the gas and
blow Dale Jarrett off the track. It sounded as if she was at the race
track in person. I couldn't believe it at first, but it happened like
clockwork over the rest of the 2001 season. Then, the winter racing
season break set-in.

In the interim season, my wife seemed bored. Even with Thanksgiving
Holiday and Christmas season ahead, she had lost her outlet of
feelings. My wife received a calendar on Christmas day. On one
night, I saw her jump up real quick and rush in the kitchen. Jan came
back with three items; a pen, 2002 NASCAR race schedule, and a 2002
calendar. She had a smile on her face as she began counting backward
on the calendar from February 14th, the first race of the season at
Daytona. As I remember, she ended up letting me know we had 49 days
to go before the first race of the season. Every year since then she
has always counted down the days till the first race of the season.

I watch the races too. I especially like the National Anthem, the
first 20 laps, and the last 20 laps of the race. Whenever it was
convenient I would watch the races with her. She would cheer for Dale
Earnhardt Jr. and Sterling Marlin while I would cheer for Tony Stewart
and anyone else she did not like as a driver at the time (just to keep
it interesting).

Jan has expanded her interests in the total NASCAR experience. She
now follows the Bush races, watches all the qualifying, race
practices, various driver's biographies, and "the Jimmie Spencer
show".

life NASCAR adventures. My next article will be about our countdown
to Daytona Christmas Tree in 2002.
