If it was needles, wouldn't the use of whatever he was shooting up have shown up
in drug testing? Didn't NASCAR require drug testing back then?

He had such a reputation as a ladies man that infection by a woman is the
obvious conclusion.

I also feel that it was an infection from a woman. I was living in South
Florida back when Tim's popularity was at its highest, not long before his
infection became public knowledge. For a young, successful male, there were
scads of women available, all willing, and very active. Not two weeks after
I heard of his AIDs infection, I went and got tested myself, being very
single at the time.

That said, when you go back and look at some of the "Up Close" style
profiles of Tim away from the track, with the clothes he wore, and the
"larger than life" style that he had, it does sure seem to have a "gay"
appearance; but that may be more of the passage of time between the eighties
and now.

Are you kidding? They barely do it now.

It wasn't an exclusive one back then either. He used to pull up to my
house
on a hog.

He used to hang out at a bar in Charlotte called the Yellow Rose, a bike
bar.
He rode with my brother in law Chris for a couple of years.

Chris was the one who told me Tim was sick and why before it was public.
I
just couldn't believe it was so though.

He grew up right near me in Ohio.

Yes Tim was something else. I was discussing with another group about how they
show all these old races on ESPN classic. And I brought up, I'd give anything
to see one of the old races that Tim was driving in. Seems like they kinda
just wrote him out of the picture. Not sure if it's intentional or
not...probably not, but still one rarely sees an old race with him in it.

Yep! They sure did! He had suffered a severe bout of pneumonia prior to the
1987 season. (an AIDS related strain at that) He started off racing the
1987 season after finishing 3rd in the standings in 1986. He was taking
massive doses of Sudafed (OTC decongestant) to prevent a recurrence of the
pneumonia. NASCAR tested his urine, found the Sudafed and suspended him.
A lot of litigation ensued and NASCAR wanted access to his medical records
(which presumably would have revealed his HIV positive status) To make a
long story short, they didn't get access to his records and consequently,
Tim only ran 8 races which consisted of 2 wins and a handful of top 10's

Or the arm or the ass.

Not in the arm, 'cause all that knew him said he hated needles..
Not in the Ass either.. most drivers of the day will admit to Richmond's #1

And this is not my opinion, it is a well documented fact... Google this

Yes, he was amazing to watch. Another one of those drivers that moved over
from the open wheel ranks, but quite a bit of his driving was in the
supermodifieds. I recall seeing a car he was helping to develop with three
wheels on the right side of the car and only one on the left.

Met Steve Grissom when he did a one-off race over here. Mark Claussner
is race director for the series we race in.

That's about the best I can do

I met Dan Gurney, Malcolm Smith, Roger DeCoster and several others at
various parties our neighbor had when I was a kid. Gurney was the epitome
of cool as far as I was concerned. My neighbor's son started wrenching for
Malcolm while were still in high school.
