Default Nascar hypocrisy - 02-17-2006 , 08:08 AM

Anyone find it hypocritical that Nascar wants to limit owners to 4 teams,
saying that big multi-car teams make it difficult for small operations to
get started, yet then they have the top-35 club that certainly prevents
small teams from earning starting spots even though they are sometimes
faster than cars in the top 35?

Guaranteeing starting positions in any fashion is ridiculous.

Shades of earlettes at Indy.

I questioned the decision to limit field penetration by teams other than
the "good 'ol boyz" of NASCAR. I think t was NASCAR's attempt to build
a following for their "hero" drivers that would be running every week.
NASCAR seems all about building fan following at any cost over true
competition.

Agreed. The spirit of competition does not include the philosophy of
guaranteeing anything.

Have you all forgotten the simple fact that NASCAR in the top level is
first and foremost an entertainment business? They will make the most
money not only for themselves but the drivers, owners and sponsers by
featuring the best they have to offer. It's no different than the
Movie and Television industry who also try to use the best and most
popular actors whenever possible.

Hypocritical? Probably, but still the best entertainment they can
provide for the fans.

At what point does it cease to be a sport and become pure entertainment like
the WWE?

Believe it or not, professional wrestling was real at one time, many decades
ago.

Unfortunately, that train has left the station. I think you are right
about May 1987 when Bill Elliott set the, still standing, speed record
of 212.809 when qualifying for the pole at the May 1987 Talladega race.
That is when the micro-managing by NASCAR started IMHO.

You aren't assuming that Nascar is actually limiting team size for the
reason that they stated in public, are you?
I don't like Roush, but they are only doing it to f*ck him.

Nascar didn't like the concept of one person owning half of the ten teams in
the fix, err, chase.

Speed kills.....if you can't handle it.

I agree, although I have also heard speculation that it was done to prevent
Toyota from coming in and owning a bunch of teams as well.

Must of been before you were born. The Dusek brothers were 6 decades
ago and they were about as dirty as they come. Although there was a
time a little later when guys like Verne Gagne & Lou Thesz were half
way real wrestlers. Gagne was a great wrestler in college.
