Default NASCAR newsgroup civility - 05-27-2007 , 10:24 AM

Hello all:

I have posted a few observations here and after careful study of this NG, I would like to place some ideas and thoughts for you all to consider.

It is apparent to me that there are some very young and immature posters who seem to see this newsgroup itself as a sport, not NASCAR. T*&^%# comes to mind rather quickly. Others are interested, but have very limited knowledge (which is okay) about the subject at hand, which is NASCAR. There are others who are here only to make a quick $dollar by peddling some junk, while there are some cross-posters who really need to be eliminated. My virus software has had several "hits" when I tried to open or follow the links provided by these malicious posters.

Then there are some who seem to be so low in the self-esteem department that they need somebody to hear what they have to say, even if it is not intelligent, relevant, or important. There are several who probably are not much more than Manufactured Housing renters who have only WebTV to post on and usually their contribution consists of argument and flaming. There is one poster (only one) who I have placed in the "kill file" and that would be
N#$%*&, since she seems to need to make remarks which could simply be reposts of others or of news articles off the Associated Press. I find her, in my mind, to be worthless to read and she seems to have a feminist attitude when one tries to engage her off-group and get her out of her pontificating mode. Unfortunately, I am not P.C. so I don't need to read anyone, especially her.

Now, what I want to propose is that each and every one of us stop hiding behind our anonymity and come out to say a little about ourselves. For example, our age, education level, past history with racing, occupation, place or city or origin and current home town location. Additionally, any interesting tidbits about oneself which might be consistent to this exercise. I think that then, we can see each other as humans, not to be flamed or disrespected, although I fear that some on here want to disrespect because it makes them feel superior to others. If we could agree to do that, then I might take some of the posters remarks more seriously (and I am sure that is what they want us to do) than if they are anonymous keystrokers with questionable credentials or mental health.

I can start out to a limited degree; I have held several racing licenses and was named "Race Driver of the Year" for Alabama SCCA in 1971. I was invited personally by the Secretary General of the Automobile Club de L'Ouest (the Lemans sponsoring club) to race the 24 Heurs du Lemans around 1975. Bobby Allison Racing, in Hueytown, built my 71 Camaro for that challenge. I held FIA, NASCAR, SCCA, IMSA licenses along with a pilot's license issued by the FAA. I have been the public affairs officer (Lt.) for the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, stationed at Dobbins AFB. Was an aerospace engineering major at the University of Alabama (class of '65, but dng) and have three grown daughters (oldest a lawyer for a judge at the AL Supreme Court) and 7 grandchildren. I am retired and live in a Birmingham AL suburb and have a dog kennel. I raise Shih Tzu, Min. Schnauzer, Pekingese, and Toy Poodles. I also have a group of Champion-bred Blue-Tick hounds along with two "American English Coonhound" females.

I have raced at Daytona, Road Atlanta, and other racetracks. I personally knew Neil Bonnet, Bobby Allison, Red Farmer, and most of the BIR crowd. I owned an auto dealership which sold Peugeot and Lotus autos and used Ferrari-s. I am Caucasian, male, an elected politician, and because of a kidney transplant, am retired, but not idle. I just inherited my late father's estate worth several $ and his Sales and Service company for lawn and garden equipment.. Oh, I am 65 and have seen my share of the world and haven't forgotten any of it.

I realize that as the book of Matthew says, I may be casting "...my pearls in front of swine..." but I am willing to take the chance to make this newsgroup a couple levels higher in quality and to civilize the posts a little. I hope you can find some merit in my idea(s).

Sincerely

DW

I was excited to read this post.. however your post was far too short to get
your point across. 749 words? Come on, you can crank out a 4000 word
statement for us!

Let's see.....
I live in a mobie home, use Webtv, and I have a college degree. I post
rarely, but had to reply.
NO ONE ever got smarter, better looking or richer just because they
post on a pc.
Thanks for the cheap shot.

Please consider these ideas first. Learn how to use your newsreader. We
should not have to refromat your posts to keep them from spilling over the
edge of the page. And stop posting HTML to Usenet. Both of these are no-
nos.

Q: Why is top posting frowned upon?

Welcome to usenet! a.k.a. the jungle, the wild wild west, etc. etc..
You're obviously fairly new to this whole "newsfroup" thing.

I definitely don't resemble that remark. At least for this post. (The
part about the MH renters, not the arguing and flaming)

Ah, yes. You're one of those people who want to change the world. In my
10 years of reading newsgroups, I've seen most people like you come and
go.

If you want complete civility, you might find yourself more comfortable
in a moderated discussion board or forum (a non-usenet website).

By the way, if you want to practice what you preach, stop posting in
HTML. It's a breach of netiquette. Otherwise, you'll just end up looking
like a hypocrite. And lest you think I have flamed you, I most certainly
have not. It's called "constructive criticism".

Kinda full of yourself ain't ya? For someone quoting Christian
beliefs,
you sure got yourself up on a podium? Why do you think you are better
than someone who uses a webtv, or happens to live in manufactured
housing? To me that speaks volumes about you.
You think you're better than people.

That's a sin toots.

It matter not where a person lives, it matters not how a person gets
to the group, it does matter how a person conducts themselves once
they get to the group. You failed. GETCHER nose out of the air.
