Default OT: Astronaut Wally Schirra, RIP - 05-03-2007 , 11:51 AM

This has nothing to do with NASCAR ... I don't know how many of you were
young'uns of the '60s like me, but in those days the only folks I thought
were cooler and badder than racing drivers were the astronauts, especially
the original Mercury guys. Wally Schirra was one of them and wound up being
the only man to fly both Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. He died today at 84.
That leaves only Glenn and Carpenter from the original Mercury 7.

check out the post on Wally over in alt.collecting.autographs. Pretty neat
story from someone who actually met the late astronaut!

A true American hero that many of the younger generation are not aware of. On the cusp of space exploration, these guys were eager to crawl into something the size of a telephone booth, sit on a small nuclear explosion and be hurled into something no one knew about. I think John Glenn is the last remaining original seven astronauts living.

Scott Carpenter is still kicking.
