Default OT: i know this is a nascar group but.. - 07-26-2009 , 11:35 PM

a horrible accident happened in the F1 qualifying yesterday. can't
find any english commentary but this video works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-cL9BFba1Q&feature=related

a spring flew off the car in front and hit ferrari's felipe massa in
the head, and broke through the helmet and he is now in hospital after
surgery to fix a fractured skull, was listed as life-threatening, but
is now apparently stable. hope he will come out alright, i meant to
post about this yesterday but have been so busy getting ready to move
out on my own (didn't even get to watch the race today, although i
hear it was a crock). just shows the danger's of open-wheel racing and
is eerily similar to an accident last week where a wheel flew off a F2
car and killed a driver after he was hit in the head by the wheel.
wish felipe the best of luck.

He got a cut over his eye and a shiner. It is in no way life-threatening
unless they kill him in the Hungarian hospital. He will be back at the next
race in three weeks as good as if it had never happened. Such drama over a
black eye.

ArBee, when you're right, you're right. This time, you're wrong.

that cut went right through his skull, and he fractured his skull, had
brain swelling and a concussion. not just a "shiner"

latest news from his doc doesn't sound great :\

"he said Massa would definitely not return to the track this season, and
that his long-term future in the sport was in doubt.
"I don't know (if he can return)," Veres said. "It's too early to say
anything concerning his future, regarding the race."

yes ............. from a piece of steel which penetrated his helmet and/or
visor at about 200 mph. Much more serious than a slight abrasion and a
shiner.

It is in no way life-threatening

well at least he's no longer in life-threatening condition, but yes
the future outlook is bleak for his career. to be honest though, as
long as this man can live a normal life after i'll be happy. looks
like he might have eye damage which may or may not be able to be
fixed. this was a scary thought though

"Veres remained hopeful that Massa would walk again, as he was slowly
recovering his motor skills and responding to doctors requests to move
limbs. He remained on a respirator and would be sedated until his
condition improved further." i didn't realize his walking ability was
in question, probably some nerve damage? in that case it's almost
certain he will never race again, these men have to have the quickest
reflexes in the world. i'm still holding out and praying for him
though, he's a good driver, and spent a long time on the sidelines
waiting for either schumy or barrichello to retire or change seats,
rather than jumping into a less competitive car right away, he stayed
as a test driver for ferrari

was never much of a Massa fan but the way he handled missing the WDC by 1
point last year raised my esteem for him.

That report sounds bad but elite sportspeople have made surprising
recoveries before. I'm not writing off his driving career until I hear it's
over from him personally.
