There was a horrific wreck at Homestead this morning during final
practice. ESPN showed it right before the Rutgers-Tennessee game.
One car hit the wall, and spotters were telling their drivers to go
low, but the car slid down the track and was hit by another car
going
full speed. Ed Carpenter and Paul Dana are in critical condition.
Jerry said the news was delayed because they were trying to locate
Paul Dana's wife who was at home in Indiana.

I think it was one of the more horrifying wrecks I've ever seen. My
prayers go out to the drivers and their family and crew.

Carpenter involved in yet another IRL tragedy!

How many more will it take to get Carpenter, his team and owner, and
all associated with Vision Racing out of auto racing all together.
Its been over 10 years that they have been the ruination of open
wheel.

Since Carpenter was sitting still, it's hard to place the blame on
him.
ANY driver can spin out or slide up and down the track.

When there is a car sitting still on the track, it behooves the
spotters
or the drivers in action to avoid hazards.

The driver and spotter have some responsibility. The car does have
brakes. ;-) However, I saw the crash video and it appears the car
construction had something to do with the drivers death too. The car
was upside down. The driver most have had a head or more likely a
severe spinal cord injury. With proper car chassis, the driver should
be able to survive a crash like that...one would think.

When I first saw the wreck, and wasn't sure which was sitting still and
which flew into the air, I thought for sure the one sitting still would die.
I guess I expected that the driver of the car sitting still would have to
absorb the impact himself, whereas the one hitting and then flying into the
air would share the impact with his car.

Its not that Carpenter was sitting still. Its that he has a long
history of incompetence leading to spins, pushing cars off the track,
running as a moving chicane, and being a general obstacle. He regularly
takes out competitive cars as he races them while being laps off the lead.

There's nothing to compare him to in NASCAR except to say he would be
like Stevie Wonder running at Talledega.

In this incident, the spotters told their drivers to take the low line
to avoid Carpenter before Carpenter moved to the bottom of the track.
Hardly Dana's fault that he followed his spotter's instructions. And
hardly the spotter's fault for telling his driver to take the path that
was open. Carptenter, through his complete incompetence, was the one
who spun and hit the wall.

Carpenter is a waste of carbon and oxygen. He's only out there
exhibiting his lack of talent due to his uncle who single-handedly
created a series that has been the ruin of open wheel.

Don't ask me what I really think.

Reports say he was wide open when he hit Carpenter, why?

Why didn't he slow down or stop?

Its the IRL. Safety hasn't ever seemed to be the top objective on their
list.

In the end, the driver has eyes and is ultimately the one to decide
where to position his car.

It was a tragic accident, nothing more or less. Nobody is at fault, IMO.
