Default OT: Indy Racing Wreck - 03-26-2006 , 12:13 PM

There was a horrific wreck at Homestead this morning during final practice.
ESPN showed it right before the Rutgers-Tennessee game. One car hit the
wall, and spotters were telling their drivers to go low, but the car slid
down the track and was hit by another car going full speed. Ed Carpenter
and Paul Dana are in critical condition. Jerry said the news was delayed
because they were trying to locate Paul Dana's wife who was at home in
Indiana.

I think it was one of the more horrifying wrecks I've ever seen. My prayers
go out to the drivers and their family and crew.

Terrible news. Just saw the clip on Speed. Not trying to nitpick the
tragedy, but what happened with Carpenter hitting Dana a good 2-3 seconds
after Dana had come to rest on the track? No spotters? Reminded me a bit of
the tragic ARCA accident (Eric Martin & Deb Renshaw) a couple of years back
at Charlotte.

Sad news...

I think it was the opposite - it was Carpenter who hit the wall. Dr. Jerry
said that the spotters were telling people to go low, and Dana went to go
low and Carpenter's car slid down the track. Dana's car hit Carpenter and
flew into the air. I really thought Carpenter would be the one to be
killed - he is sitting still, and would take the full impact. Evidently
Carpenter is listed in stable condition.

Carpenter involved in yet another IRL tragedy!

How many more will it take to get Carpenter, his team and owner, and all
associated with Vision Racing out of auto racing all together. Its been
over 10 years that they have been the ruination of open wheel.

Since Carpenter was sitting still, it's hard to place the blame on him.
ANY driver can spin out or slide up and down the track.

When there is a car sitting still on the track, it behooves the spotters
or the drivers in action to avoid hazards.
