The only bummer is the ammo price, but this is not something you do every
weekend. Some folks use M-60's and such instead of AN/M2's because .308
is so much cheaper than .50 BMG.

LOL! Yah. That's neat that someone hosts an event like that. Growing up at
Ft Bragg, I've seen my share of live fire demos, and they're awesome
displays. Kinda cool these guys had their little girls involved IMO. And I
caught a site of some tracers being used there as well, they're catching on
at ranges around the country, I see them at my local range out of .223s all
the time.

I went to the said local range before deer season opened last year (October)
to zero my new inline muzzleloader and there was a guy up there with a
Barrett 50, model 99 (single shot). And MAN! Loud? You betcha. I couldn't
figure why he'd want to shoot it at a range that topped out at 250yds, but
he was hammering his target down range. That's the single loudest shoulder
fired weapon I've ever been near when it was being used...And at about $5 a
shot, it's quite expensive to shoot as well. Not to mention the $4k purchase
price of the weapon, sans a scope.

I live near a large Nation Guard training compound that measures
approximately 73,000 square acres. Weapons ranges include: 50 live fire
ranges capable of handling all weapons systems organic to a Light Infantry
Brigade to include Mortars and Artillery; 5 Automated Ranges for small arms
and handgun qualification; a Crew Combat Range; and 4 Platoon/Squad Movement
to Contact ranges (400 by 800 meters). Training Areas include three Major
Maneuver Areas with a total of 55,000 plus acres of varied topography --
planted pine plantations, swamps, oak hammocks, desert like terrain -- with
minimal environmental restrictions, with the capability to support a Light
Infantry Brigade plus one Battalion of aggressors. The MOUT Collective
Training Facility consists of 16 Buildings, Bridge & Tunnel Trainer.

Last evening I heard a few blasts (155's likely). went outside to hear the
sounds of fully auto fire likely from apache's. 4 to 5 sec. bursts.

Sounds like my time growing up in Fayetteville. Little thuds, were 105s.
Medium thuds, 155s. BIG thuds, big Marine guns, I guess 7"ers... And then
there are the A-10s that are (for a time) still at Pope AFB, and their big
nose cannons. And Simmons AAF has a bunch of Apaches at it too.

It's funny to talk to newbies to the Fayetteville/Ft Bragg area when they
speak of all the "noise" that happens around here, espeically when they live
out near the small arms ranges, in Western Fayetteville (where auto 50s and
SAWs can be heard all hours of the day). Us natives just laugh and call it
"the sound of freedom". Luckily, we didn't live in the the Pope glide path,
or we'd have had C-130s buzzing overhead all day and night. Now, there're
more C-17s out there than C-130s, and they can ramp down those turbines and
come in a lot more quietly than those old turbo props could.

I am almost finished with my 1919A4. Give me another 3 months and that bad
boy is gonna be incredible. Barrett Model 99 is OK, but I really want the
new Serbu with the 5 round magazine as soon as it comes out (at only
$2,195). http://www.50bmgstore.com/50bmgcurrentprices2.htm
BTW, I only pay $1.20 a round for .50 BMG at CheaperThanDirt. I get all
my ammo there or at MidwayUSA.

The 8" aren't heard that much any more. I'm about 12 miles from the range
east boundary. Them 8inchers would shake the house...

Folks complained about stuff falling from walls so after so many complaints,
the commandant would call a cease...

The big jet powered troop transports (C-17s ?) fly over dark, at about 500
feet. you hear em coming but can't see em..
