How now? *Petty drove for Holman-Moody....

Come on John, I'm pretty sure the majority of NASCAR fans (especially
one that is 18yrs old) associate RP with two things, Dodge and STP.

?????
He'd been running Pontiacs since '82.
Prior to that, RP ran Plymouths, and in 1969 he drove a *gasp* Ford
Torino Talladega, as Chrysler Corp didn't have a car that was
competitive on the superspeedways. He rejoined Plymouth in 1970 when
they introduced the Superbird.

Anyone old enough to remember Petty in an STP Dodge (73-78) is
probably old enough to remember Petty in a Ford.

Younger fans would only ever have seen Petty driving GM products
(Olds, Chevy, Pontiac from 79 till the end of his career - I
don't recall him ever driving a Buick).

Or maybe the vacated Truex ride at DEI.

uhh truex is going to waltrip next year...

uhh... yeah..... that's what vacated means...
LOL. Of course, DEI still has Almirola under contract, and
IMO Almirola has a lot more potential than McMurray.

When I think of RP the 80's aren't the first thing that come to mind,
the 70's are. I just checked and all but one of his championships were
either in a Plymouth or Dodge (which are the same thing anyway).

I'm not.

And 6 of his 7 championships were in a Chrysler product. That is why I
would think that most NASCAR fans would associate him with Dodge /
Plymouth. Most of the older footage (like "Back in the Day") shows him
in a Chrysler product. Even the Hemi commercials that he did a few years
ago makes me think of him driving a Chrysler product.

I have to go along with Petty/Chrysler as the first
association that comes to my mind, whenever his name
pops up.
Well... maybe not the first thing, but first thing with regards to
what kind of car he drove.....

Me too, but just a plain blue one. When someone says Petty/STP,
then I think more of the Pontiac era.

First things that come to my mind when I hear the name RP are Chrysler,
STP, his hat and sunglasses. I don't know if he was the first NASCAR
driver to do a commercial or not, but the first one I remember was RP's
STP Oil Treatment commercial.
