I asked this in here a while back but maybe there are some new faces in
here. Would anybody remember if and who televised the 1985 Winston/Alabama
500 at Talledga won by Bill Elliot when he comes from 2 laps down to win? I
found a video on ebay of the race but it's only about 45 minutes so it cant
be the full race and the info says it was from NBC? I dont ever remember
NBC doing Nascar? That was a bit before my time, hopefullly some of you
older ones could help me out here? Thanks in advance!

I don't go back quite that far, but in the late 80s,ESPN did the
Winston 500. Not sure when they started, but they did it in 88 and
89.

Yeah, my first thought was that it was on ESPN, but might have been CBS back
then for Talladega.

I'm with you, I think 1985 was a year in ESPN's early years with the sport.
I found a snippet here, discussing ESPN's coverage of Bill's run for the
Winston Million that year (1985) here:

http://www.bjwor.com/991223.html (about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down the page,
under the heading of "ESPN and Cable TV")

This same piece also says that CBS carried a Talledega race rach year as
well, albeit the July race, not the May date the OP is referring to. It also
says that by 1991, each race week was usually on TV somewhere, be it " CBS,
ABC, WTBS, ESPN or TNN" with no NBC in sight. My guess is the 85 Winston 500
at Dega, was on ESPN. All I can say for sure is that I didn't have cable
back then and most likely listened to it on the radio. :-)

May of 85? I was probably at sea, and didn't catch the race at all. Too
far back to remember that many details, anyway. I killed off those cells
long ago.

Aww, c'mon Carey! lol It's only 21 years ago, and I thought the first cells
to go were the short term memory ones?

"What did I eat for lunch yesterday? I've no idea. But I can tell you what
car, what day of the week, and what the weather was like when I took my
driver's license test back in the early 1980s the day I turned 16." - Me
(and a lot of other people in their late 30s if I had to guess...)

I do remember chunks of races from back then though, and I certainly
remember Bill winning the million at Darlington later that year. I was there
for that one, as Darlington is only about 2 hours away from me, even with
bad traffic.

You know, Sim, back when I was in my mid to late 30's, I could remember
stuff like that, too. Even quite a bit of my travels, and different and
unique salvage jobs, voyages, things like that. In the last couple of
years, it takes quite a bit more effort. (I turn 47 today). Unless
something really extraordinary happened, or I have it written down, I have
some issues with the details. What is really scary is to pick up a picture
that I took and not be able to tell what and where it was right away.

I do remember Bill winning the million, and even think I saw it live on TV.
The trouble is, it has been replayed so many times, it could be something I
saw on a racing news show. For the years from 1978 to 1988, I wasn't home
one heck of a lot. The longest stretch was for a year and a half in 80-81
to finish college. All the rest of the time was split between the far east,
Europe, the Caribbean and running back and forth between US ports, as far
north as Connecticut, down to Lauderdale, and most ports in between, and
around the Gulf to Corpus.

In all honesty, though, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I was able to
live a life that most young men just dream about.
