If all of you purists want to see racing that is not affected by the
almighty dollar then go watch some. It happens at local tracks with no
purse all the time. |
Yeah, if you root for the mini-stocks or pure stock classes that aren't
allowed to spend any money.
At my local track the pro stocks and modifieds are spending tens of
thousands of dollars on engines and chassis. There is one major sponsor who
owns 3 cars outright, and sponsors at least a dozen others. The wars that
happen on this track make anything in NASCAR pale in comparison.
They just ended the regular season for the pros and mods. The final mod
race was one long marathon of paybacks, yellows and black flags. A popular
driver was assaulted in the pits by a crewman and the sheriff had to come
out. Now, the speedway is taking the word of the crewman who attacked the
driver, but claimed the driver started it. (The crewman is 6'6" and almost
300, the driver is about 5'8" and 175. Duh?) Not coincidentally, the driver
is one who has been openly critical of the speedway's management.
Incidentally, the incident in question involved brothers-in-law. Hah!
If the local track has no purse, it's likely in the middle of a cow pasture
somewhere. I'm not saying you won't see good racing there, but the myth
that local tracks are immune to money pressure is just that.
