Default QUESTION - 05-21-2007 , 02:45 PM

Teams used to have two different RPM Limiting Chips in their
ignition system so they could raise the RPM at the end of races for
that little extra speed. Now with NASCAR limiting RPM through the
limiting of gears, the teams wouldn't be using the different RPM
Chips, so don't they use the unused Chip for whatever RPM would limit
the speed in the pits so they would be able to go as close to the
limit, but not allow them to speed? Say for example, using 2nd gear
and limiting the RPM to 4000RPM's would limit the speed to 2 miles
under the maximum speed allowed. That way the driver would just need
to flip the switch, get into 2nd gear and hold the pedal to the metal
or moire than enough at least so they would not over speed, but would
be very near the maximum. In any case, I'm surprised some team hasn't
done this already, since there are a lot of smart people involved,
then there must be something I don't know?

Why do you think this? Just because NASCAR limits the gear choices
doesn't suddenly mean that an engine stops making more power at a
higher RPM.

I have wondered myself why the teams don't use a shift light set a little
below pit speed, not a cure all but I bet Matt Kenseth could have seen that
when he was exiting pit road in all the traffic.
