Its funnier than "Stroker Ace"

I really like the part where the new guys tells the old hand that he
learnt
all about NASCAR racing from watching the telecasts on ESPN.

100 miles on the tires, 1 gallon of gas left, 140 degrees in the car, race
cars on all sides.....

I bet the wisdom to the ESPN analyst would really help at that point.

I thought the look on Cary Elwes' face when Tom Cruise plows into him after
the race was priceless.

Robert Duvall is a great actor. Too bad he wasted his time on that P.O.S.

There is no such thing as a great actor. Great actresses are a different
story. If Helen Hunt or Alicia Silverstone had big bosoms they would have
been great.

Some real life drivers who did cameos "Thunder" are quite embarassed about
it now.
Rusty Wallace mentioned that in an interview several years back.

The movie was titled "The Last American Hero" and starred Jeff Bridges
as
Junior Jackson. Here is a brief description:

Lamont Johnson's subtle direction graces this true-life success story
about racecar driver Junior Jackson (Jeff Bridges), based on stock-car
champion Junior Johnson. As a child in North Carolina, Jackson stays one
step ahead of reform school until his father (Art Lund) is thrown in
prison for moonshining. Seeing the error of his ways, Jackson begins to
concentrate... More his driving skills, hoping to become a professional
stock car racer to raise money to get his father released from jail.
Jackson rises from the ranks into the highest rung of professional stock
car racing, but Jackson finds his independent nature is compromised by
the corporate realities of the professional sports world. The real
Junior
Johnson served as technical advisor on the film. ~ Paul Brenner, All
Movie Guide...

While it is the typical Hollywood version of racing, there are some really
good shots of short track racing in the 70's in that one. The scenes at
Martinsville come to mind, in particular, with a passing freight train
moving behind the short back stretch grandstands.

Carey in Manvel
While "I know what you meant", the idea that one stretch at Martinsville is
shorter than the other one, is kind of funny. But yes, the B/S grandstands
are "shorter" than the tower side stands. For now. I hear they're hoping to
"bowl" it in more like Bristol now that the main train line has been removed
from the B/S area. Depends on what the new co-owners want to do with it, and
whether or not it will keep both its current dates once Kentucky wins or
settles their lawsuit...

How about "old" footage from Richmond, back when it was at the fairgrounds.
Or at the "new" location, but when it was still a more traditionally shaped
oval? And the asphalt, lower banked Bristol images? Ah, the good old
days....lol Even though it is the fastest track on the circuit, I still like
the "old" oval (not tri-oval) shaped Atlanta too...

Actually, there are a few "Harry Hogg" lines from that piece that are
priceless: (paraphrased from memory)

"Now Cole, tars.....is whut wins a race." (How true, you gotta first finish,
to ever finish first)

"And rubbin' son, is racin'"

"You see that dog there. That's the best coon dog in the county, and I
didn't teach him a damn thing."

and my personal favorite "Peach or Cherry?" which is very funny in a state
where moonshine still thrives, and peach and cherry are the only flavors one
could find, if they were actually looking, which I don't.....lol

I actually got to see them do some of the filming at Lake Norman when they
were shooting it back when (1989, early 1990 maybe?)

was at the July Daytona race the year this movie was filming. couldn't get
close to any real actors but could get close to the cars they used. The
cars were way too dirty and beat up to look real. During that race the
movie cars would come out at the head of the field as if they were leading
the race. during practice the cars with the cameras on the hood would run
around at about 100 or so. Then you'd see a few cars in a pack with the
camera truck on the apron, again at a much slower that race speed...was
kinda neat to see how they filmed it though...

Probably shooting it in '89, since I remember seeing it in 1990. And the
only reason that I remember that is racing related. I was on vacation with
the ex when I saw it, up in southern California. It was the same week we
went to Ascot during their last season, which was 1990.

I remember that race (and some others that year). The announcers kept
mentioning that certain cars where in there for filming of the upcoming
NASCAR movie, blah blah....and it's still amazing to think that this movie
pre-dated Jeff Gordon and the modern young gun movement. Of course it is
loosely based on Hendrick, Tim Richmond and Harry Hyde, so I guess it isn't
that hard to believe...

As for the "movie" cars, they ended up in Rick Hendrick's posession
thereafter, and spent the entire Summer of 1990 in Chapel Hill at Rick
Hendrick's Performance Chevrolet delaership. We stopped in a couple of times
and gandered at the cars, and the "boom" car too. It was most of a car,
painted up like a DOT/Mello Yello stock car, on a boom of some sort on an 18
wheeler trailer, that could be lifted, spun around, etc. Looked like a ride
one would see at the local fair. I assumed they used this rig to get
"action" shots of Cruise "wrecking" without actually putting him in harm's
way. They also had the two "non stock" cars that were seen racing on the
short short dirt track in the background while Cole was pondering his racing
career at some point mid-film. Basically just a couple of hot rods, I cannot
even recall their makes. I wanna say one was a Torino of some sort, and the
other an older Camaro, but can't say for sure.

That sounds right. My wife and I had recently married (Summer of '89) and we
were scouting condos on Lake Norman to buy, since at that time, I didn't
miss being at a NASCAR event in the state, or even within 400-500 miles from
our Raleigh home. We ended up buying one in Cornelious (on the lake) and
kept it until the late 90s (sold it in 1998 IIRC) so we could relocate our
vacation home up into the mountains, near Boone. I haven't missed an August
Bristol race since, and haven't been to a Charlotte race since 2000....lol
You couldn't pay me to fight that Charlotte(Concord) race traffic anymore.
Hell, I hate Charlotte traffic in general, and have had my Carolina Panthers
PSLs for sale for some years now too for the same reason...
