That sounds right. My wife and I had recently married (Summer of '89) and
we
were scouting condos on Lake Norman to buy, since at that time, I didn't
miss being at a NASCAR event in the state, or even within 400-500 miles
from
our Raleigh home. We ended up buying one in Cornelious (on the lake) and
kept it until the late 90s (sold it in 1998 IIRC) so we could relocate our
vacation home up into the mountains, near Boone. I haven't missed an
August
Bristol race since, and haven't been to a Charlotte race since 2000....lol
You couldn't pay me to fight that Charlotte(Concord) race traffic anymore.
Hell, I hate Charlotte traffic in general, and have had my Carolina
Panthers
PSLs for sale for some years now too for the same reason...

You know, I haven't been to a Cup race ever. The closest I came was a
Winston West/ARCA race up in College Station back in 93. I really don't
have a great desire to, either; what with all the crowds, etc. And my
interest has diminished significantly over the years. Hell, 35 years ago, I
hung on to every snippet I could see on ABC's Wide World of Sports, or read
in the paper or Berggren's Stock Car Racing Magazine. These days, it's the
old diminishing return thing. I don't buy collectibles, or particularly
have a favorite driver. As you can tell, I do like my short track open
wheel racing, and many of the drivers I follow over there end up in Cup
these days. About the only racing thing I "collect" are race track
T-shirts, not driver shirts. I don't even own a driver shirt. And, I don't
do the whole NFL thing, either. I haven't watched a game all season. I
think the last NFL game I went to was up in New York, when the Jets were
still playing at Shea. And that was because I got in free, due to where I
was going to college then. About the biggest crowd I deal with (probably
the biggest one day event crowd, though) is the one at Indy for the 500.
But they do a pretty good job of getting you out of there, at least once you
get to your car.

How about "old" footage from Richmond, back when it was at the
fairgrounds. Or at the "new" location, but when it was still a more
traditionally shaped oval? And the asphalt, lower banked Bristol
images? Ah, the good old days....lol Even though it is the fastest
track on the circuit, I still like the "old" oval (not tri-oval)
shaped Atlanta too...
When did RIR move?

The old 1/2 mile track was located on the Fairgrounds property, and when
it was reconfigured, it was done on the same property. My understanding
was that RIR's owners bought the Firgrounds property and then sold out to
ISC and RIR is in the same location it has always been.

Yes - "Star". for the 60's era, Wendell was well known on the NASCAR
circuit. Grant it-he only had 1 win, but 20 top-5's and 147 top tens for
being an independent owner/driver.

Well, being a novelty, does not equate into stardom.
For those that would love to elevate a black driver
to star status, regardless, I suppose he was a star.

But in almost 500 starts... the man had ONE lead lap finish.
The race he won.
And that was controversial.

I remember that race (and some others that year). The announcers kept
mentioning that certain cars where in there for filming of the upcoming
NASCAR movie, blah blah....and it's still amazing to think that this movie
pre-dated Jeff Gordon and the modern young gun movement. Of course it is
loosely based on Hendrick, Tim Richmond and Harry Hyde, so I guess it
isn't
that hard to believe...

As for the "movie" cars, they ended up in Rick Hendrick's posession
thereafter, and spent the entire Summer of 1990 in Chapel Hill at Rick
Hendrick's Performance Chevrolet delaership.
snip
Bobby Hamilton made his first cup start at that race driving one of the
camera cars. DW recommened him to RH. He qualified 5th in a car that passed
inspection and even managed to lead a few laps before the movie folks said
they had enough footage and Nascar black flagged him. Must've about killed
him to have to park it with less than 100 laps left. He got is first win
later at Phoenix driving for Richard Petty.

and my personal favorite "Peach or Cherry?" which is very funny in a

one
could find, if they were actually looking, which I don't.....lol

this is where Franklin county Va still shines(pun intended) then...we have a
large variety. Peach, damsen, Cherry, Blueberry, strawberry, etc.....good
stuff...

Regardless of the reason, you still know who he was decades later. IMO, that
makes him a star at some level. Maybe not for the same reason that others
from that era were considered stars, but a star nonetheless.
