we'd still have to figure
out how to make it do it's thing differently for each of the
4 wheels,

If I'm reading the intent of such a scenario correctly, perhaps it would
only be one tire - most likely right front - that would require any sort
of manipulation. This would simplify the guessing game immensely.

Can we remember any particuarly remarkable instances of RCR having right
front tire problems at short tracks in the last year or so? Perhaps while
developing something?

-Russ.

Years past Dave Marcus would drive an R&D car for RCR. Does RCR still have a team driving R&D?

You're not accounting, here, for the difference in the forces exerted
on a racing tire versus a street tire. A street tire might seal up
against the rim after it's leaked down a bit, and stay pretty tight.
A racing tire will unseal every time the car goes into the corner
and side-loads the tire.

Plus, as I mentioned to Russ, you've still got the problem of
making all 4 corners leak in the proper proportion to what each
needs for good traction.

Exactly. It goes right back to control.

Carey in Manvel

Tires are laid out and labelled prior to race time, for which corner they
are to be mounted on -- in fact, they try to match up batch lots and put
them on together from what they are given by goodyear -- during the
extensive preparation that is done on them. Could even be only 1 or 2
tires
actually need this "adjustment" to improve handling, rather than all 4.

-Russ.

But Russ, they don't get said wheels and tires until they arrive at the
track each week. Do they really have time, and the room to hide a laser
cutter in the hauler, and can get such precise work done without being seen
by at least *someone* outside of their team in the garage?

If they brought their own wheels and tires each week, and had this bleeding
edge technology actually available to them, I may could then argue against
the possibility less. I just can't see any of it happening and regard the
entire "story" as some obviously decent fiction given the people that have
bought into the possibility.

Another point on keeping this quiet... I don't know if it's still being
done, but the teams used to put their used tires and wheels along the pit
road after the race. There was a tractor/trailer rig that would go along and
pick all of them up, take them somewhere for dismounting, and deliver each
teams wheels back to their shops during the week. If the wheels were being
fudged, you'd possibly raise an eyebrow or two for wanting to hold out a
small handful of them to deal with yourself. Could you imagine if another
team got back one of your modified wheels by mistake?

I don't think Smokey ever considered cold fusion as a fuel... But
there was that one time when he got nailed for an illegal gas
source... After they pulled his tank and found it to be legal, Smokey
hopped in his car and drove off, leaving the tank in the hands of the
NASCAR official... That may be just one of those pit myths but who
knows...

Not a pit myth. 'Don't recall the exact details, but he had a
considerable amount of 1 inch line run throughout the car giving a few
extra gallons of capacity.
I heard he had used his roll cage as a fuel cell.

That was part of it - supposedly had tubing running through the cage.

Here's a failry recent, and IMO, accurate article on just what you guys are
discussing:

I don't beleive you could just limit the pressure growth in one
tire, and not end up with an evil handling car.

Even if you could, there's the problem of getting the correct
wheel modified. The way it normally works is the team gives
Goodyear the wheels to mount tires on, they don't do it
themselves. And since all the wheels are susposed to be the
same, I think Goodyear would be a little suspicious if RCR
came in and said "hey, see these wheels with the red tape on
them? Make sure those get right-side tires please".

I don't know what the current process is, but I do know that each
tire has an RFID chip in it, and Goodyear does track every tire by
it's RFID to ensure they take all of them back from the track.
