Amen to that! RIP Tony.

I bet he would rather die doing something he loves, than dying at the hands
of Mohammed and Malvo while pumping gas. People die of all kind of things,
at all kinds of times. Grim Reaper is great at finding inconvenient times
to visit. That was very sad news though.

Godspeed, Tony Renna.

Did his car hit "softer wall" or regular wall?

While reports are still coming in, the most detailed one that I have seen
said that he got airborne and actually had his car ripped apart by the wire
fence above the concrete wall, I guess similar to Brack's wreck a couple of
weeks ago. IIRC, the report also said that this time it actually broke the
car apart at the cockpit area.

I am not a 'media professional' and am simply relaying from memory something
that I read online about an hour or two ago. YMMV.

From what I've read, it appears his car went up over the concrete wall
and hit the catchfence. Sounds like the tub broke in two, so my guess is
that the tub collided with one of the catchfence posts on the side (or
top) of the tub at or near the firewall. That was the failure mechanism
when Jeff Krosnoff was killed in Toronto in '96.

Somebody on the IRL NG mentioned that the fence in T3 was demolished.

Renna, who would have turned 27 years old next month, was going
into Turn 3 when his car jumped sideways and became airborne.
According to witnesses, the car cleared the four-foot concrete
wall and smashed into the catch fence -- breaking in half in the
cockpit area.

maybe the concrete walls should be made higher...4 feet seems a bit short, but
maybe that creates a problem with fan views.

i am amazed how these drivers survive these crashes (g. bodine, harmon, brack,
boat, sadler) but i guess it just catches up. no matter how hard you try, you
cannot guarantee a person crashing into a wire fence at 220 mph will survive.

I dunno. If the tub remains intact, the driver usually survives (if
there are no basilar skull fractures). In this case, and the Krosnoff
case, the tub came apart. In Brack's case, it held up.

ESPNews is showing helicopter footage of the scene. The crash
scene is in the short chute between 3 and 4. About 80' of fence
is (apparently) gone, and there is impact damage to the metal
walkway in front of the grandstand.

IRL needs to spend some serious wind tunnel time to solve this
problem. CART runs even faster at times, and *never* has cars
getting airborne (since the incident that Barry mentioned).
