still doesn't make much sense, does it?)

Dunno why you say it doesn't make sense. I beleive this is exactly
what happened.

If I'm correct, look for the post-500 penalty to be severe. This
isn't using a part which is in the grey area, or misinterpreting
an opaque NASCAR rule. This is intentionally introducing something
that you know to be in violation of the rules.

That's exactly why it doesn't make sense.

1. intentionally introducing something that you know to be in violation of the
rules
2. hoping he had the time to secretly change it back after Q but before
post-qual inspection and, if he didn't, hoping it would sneak through

Are you that:

a. desperate
b. unsure of your real stuff
c. both
d. stupid
e. all of the above

that you'd take THAT chance? or

f. in need of some time off

This is Daytona where everyone, including the inspectors, have ALL the time in
the world.

Just can't understand this fixation people have
with suspending and fining a team.

It's not "people", it's NASCAR. For whatever reason NASCAR has
decided that pressing the boundries isn't part of the game any
longer, and that they're going to punish teams who try (and thus
the fans get to amuse themselves trying to guess what new
punishment NASCAR will come up with).
I realize it's NASCAR John, but just look at all the clamor here for 2 or 4
or 5 race suspensions, huge fines, elimination from the Chase, etc. Look
how often you see the word "penalty" and "punishment" here. It applies to
things like Knaus' infraction to the 99 car's episode during the Bud
Shootout. There's a growing cry for punishment.

I was going to say the very same thing - that it was a control fixation on
NASCAR's part, but I was afraid I'd have to do too much explaining of my
position and I just didn't have the energy to go there.

Me too, but I suspect that's obvious.

Really doesn't matter with Knaus. He's a born cheat. Just look at his resume...
Yup--Chad Knaus was the Car Chief for Dale Earnhardt in 1998! D500 Winner.
Maybe 'Little Ray' didn't learn all his tricks from HMS, eh?

He's well on his way to being banned from pit road and the garage area.
He's gotten to the point where he's now a liability to Rick Hendrick as far
as points go.

Well, like I said I think it's just people amusing themselves.
They don't really care what the punishment is, or even if there
is one. What they care about is having something to talk about,
and getting some attention. It's easier to get attention if
you say "that was the evilest thing I ever saw and he should
get an 8 race suspension" than if you say "ho-hum, trivial,
give him the standard 25 points and lets get on with the race".
