Old timers wouldn't have a problem with the idea. Back in the
day they had something called a "promoters option", where there'd
be one or two starting spots at the back of the field which the
promoter could assign to popular drivers if they somehow failed
to qualify, so the fans would be happy. (the promoters option
eventually morphed into the provisional starting spots, which
NASCAR then made a mockery of by enlarging from 2 to 7, and
then made the whole thing meaningless with the T35 rule).
