Default RJR Victory Lap at Lowe's MS - 10-08-2003 , 05:33 PM

just has to grind at Earnhardt fans considering Jeff Gordon in his
special #24 will also be featured along with Richard Childress driving
a black #3.

Why on earth would NA$CAR choose to honor RJR with these
two diametrically-opposed fan bases? Ratings, Controversy?
Do u suppose that NBC might show these 2 cars before the race?

Just because DE got his 1st WC start at Charlotte
& JG got his 1st win there is no reason to link these 2 drivers.
DE had 5 wins there, JG only 4 (DW & BA had 6).
DE had 76 total WC wins, JG only has 62.
DE had 7 WC Champs, JG only has 4.
JG won the Championship in '95, DE finished 2nd.
Ever since '95, DE fans have hated JG.

Even tho DE accepted JG after '95 & may have taken
JG under his 'bidness' wing, and even tho JG has always
& continually given DE credit for helping him in many
ways, DE fans continue spewing hate towards JG.

Could it be possible for these two fan bases to finally
bury the hatchet & get on with reality?

Who cares about the "fan bases"? It was one of the hottest rivalries in the
sport.
Earnhardt vs Gordon was one of the rare rivalries to cross over into
mainstream
media, long before most papers outside the south stuck NASCAR results next
to "This Day In Sports History">

And for you 12 year olds in the audience ( or the many that act that way),
in
case you didn't realize, Richard Childress drove the #3 long before Dale Sr.
ever got inside a Winston Cup car. Like it or not, its his team and his
number.

(Go back even further, and it was Junior Johnsons'..but I won't bore you
with
more history, seeing as how most everyone wants nothing to do with anything
before last week.)

<snip>

Maybe they're using them since those two are the most responsible (among
drivers) for where NASCAR is today?

Or because they had the hottest rivalry in the last decade?

Or because they owned the 90's (7 out of 10 championships), the period
of time when NASCAR gained mainstream success and Winston became a
household name?

Or because when you say "NASCAR" or "Winston Cup", these two names
usually spring to mind?

Methinks you doth protest too much.
It irks you that Dale Earnhardt is sharing the spotlight with Gordon on
this one, doesn't it?

I don't know, I could think of better things to get riled up about.
Like somebody eating the last piece of pie.

Because JG is by far the only active driver closest to DE in terms of career
accomplishments and performance.

Considering it was a tribute to RJR... It would have also been nice to see
MORE cars, from all era's represented... Like a 7 Hooters... or 43 STP....
etc....
