Default Robin Pemberton - 02-23-2006 , 10:21 AM

He is NASCAR's vice president of competition, who handed down the penalties
to Chad Knaus this week. Ironically, Pemberton was Mark Martin's crew chief
in 1990 when the team was penalized 46 points and fined $40,000 because of a
carburetor spacer. He also received two other large fines for infractions
while serving as crew chief for Rusty Wallace.

So? Being a CC that has been whacked for being outside the rules (whatever that
means in nascar) is not an exclusive club.

Not all CCs who have been whacked are in charge of handing down penalties
either.

No, but who would you rather want in charge of catching and punishing cheaters -
a guy with demonstrated expertise in the area or a guy with an MBA?

What about the guy leaving the post? Gary Neslon had quite a reputation.
Or have we all forgotten that.

True, I guess you have a cheater policing the cheaters, lol

and your problem with that is what? Maybe you want a former CC in that position
that was never caught (if there is one). That means 1 of 3 things:

1. he cheated but was so good he never got caught
2. he's so lousy at it he doesn't know how to go about it
3. he's scrupulously honest and never even attempted to go around the letter or
intent of the rules

So how do you tell the difference? CC #1 worked for a winning team. CCs #2
and#3 got fired from losing teams

This isn't like putting a crook in charge of watching a bank vault full of
money, for cryin' out loud.

Exactly. And let's face it, Gary Nelson wasn't a choir boy during his time
in the garage either. I think NASCAR picks these types of guys because they
know how these teams' CCs think.
