Default Runner-up Finishes Equal Champ? - 08-17-2009 , 02:52 PM

Runner-up Finishes Equal Champ?
Jeff Gordon has now finished 2nd in '09 for the 6th time.
Since '98, 6 r/ups is the most & seems to equate to a championship:

'98 JG-6 r/ups & CH, MM-6 r/ups & 2nd to JG in points.
'99 DJ-6 & CH, BL-6 & 2nd pts.
'01 JG-6 & CH.
'03 KHarvick-6 but 5th in pts.
'05 TS-6 & CH.
'06 JJ-6 & CH.
'09 JG-6 & ?? TS-4, JJ-3 with 13 races to go.

David Pearson in 1969 finished 2nd 18 times of the 54 races run,
had 11 Wins, & was The Champ.

11 wins seems to be relevent . 29 top 2 finishes in 54 races will win you a
champiomship every time
18 2nds and no wins might not

Out of 51 races attempted, 44 top 10s, 42 top 5s. Not likely to
see those kind of results ever again.

We probably will never see 51 races run again, that's for sure!

But Kyle's NNS record this year, is pretty impressive..
23 starts... 20 top 10's 17 top 5's

I got a new Matco tool box for my wife.
Best trade I ever made...

With the chase you would think that being a solid top five car each
week might be enough but then the way the 48 seems to pick up the pace
it is never a certain thing. Just remember Jeff had a really good
season in '07 and a very consistant chase but the 48 was untouchable

JG's 30 Top10s of 36 races in '07 was pretty stout too, eh? MEra #1.
