Analysts noted that Nextel, which is the last remaining independent
nationwide wireless operator, would have the most to gain from the
deal and would thus likely have to cede final ownership to Sprint for
a deal to be completed.

Could NEXTEL be no more?

Gosh, is anyone surprised? I remember when Nextel was announced as
taking over for Winston that wireless companies were the kind of tech
company that regularly were here today and gone tomorrow. I also
remember a bunch of rose-colored media types in NASCAR saying how great
it would be to have Nextel on board, blah, blah, blah. Ten years? Ha.
Their deal with NASCAR will have to be grandfathered in to any merge
or sale - unless some far-sighted lawyer took care of certain escape
clauses in the original deal between NASCAR and Nextel.
