I know that when drivers switch seats midway through a race, the
driver who started the race gets the points.

However, say the car wins the race... who is actually credited with
the win? The replacement driver or the original driver? I think it
would be the starting driver, but it seems a bit of a strange area.
I'm sure the likelihood of this happening in present-day NASCAR is
slim to none... but it could happen.

The driver that starts the race gets everything....the points, the
win, the works. There's not even an asterisk in the record book.
There may be a financial arrangement between the car owner and the
relief driver, but NASCAR doesn't "officially" give a percentage of
the money to the substitute.

Can you give me an example as to when a relief driver has won, and there
wasn't and asterisk in the "record book"? And what exactly do you mean
by the "record book"?

I've haven't bought one in a while, but I used to buy the "Information
Please Sports Almanac" and they would use asterisks to point out certain
things.

we went through this already, from Jayski...
Hamlin relieves Almirola at Milwaukee Busch race and wins..for Almirola:
ESPN2 reported that no driver has ever won a Busch Series in relief of
another driver, the last time it was done in Nextel Cup was when Darrell
Waltrip relieved Donnie Allison, August 7, 1977 at Talladega. But later
NASCAR announced that in April 1985, Harry Gant filled in for Jack
Ingram at the Darlington Busch Series race and went on to win and the
credit went to Ingram. Denny Hamlin was flying from Sonoma to Milwaukee
and the helicopter could not land at the helipad, and had to land at a
nearby airport. So Aric Almirola, who won the pole in the #20 Rockwell
Chevy at the Milwaukee Mile, started the race and lead 44 laps, and on
57 a caution came out, Almirola was called to pit, where Hamlin got in
the car. Almirola refused interviews and left the track before the end
of the race and didn't celebrate his first win. See more on my Busch
Series site.(6-24-2007)

Milwaukee 2007, doesn't mention Denny Hamlin any where...

Darlington 1985, no mention of Harry Gant here either...
http://www.nascar.com/races/bg/1985/6/data/results_official.html

Talladega 1977, N.com doesn't go back that far, though not "official"
this site has proven to be pretty thorough, and no mention of DW (except
his 22nd finish position and laps led before he filled in for Allison,
even as a fill in it shows Allison leading the laps when DW was in the
car) here...
http://racing-reference.info/race?id=1977-19&series=W

more on this one from DWs wiki page:
Interestingly, while he won 84 races, one "win" which does not count was
as relief driver for Donnie Allison at the 1977 Talladega 500, which
Allison gets credit as he started the race. Waltrip had dropped out
after 106 laps and because of the heat, was driving the Hoss Ellington
#1 Hawaiian Tropic car as Allison's replacement. The irony was Waltrip
had replaced Allison at the DiGard #88 just two years previously, and
was part of the long lore of the Allisons vs Waltrip battle for 16 years.

The 1969 Volunteer 500 at Bristol on July 20, 1969. David Pearson won the
race in the #17 Holman-Moody Ford. Richard Petty's Ford dropped out on lap
60. David needed a relief driver, so Richard drove for part of the race
till David was well enough to get back in. Granted, Richard was not behind
the wheel to take the checker. But there is no mention in the record book,
with an asterisk or otherwise, of David not being in the car for the entire
race. And I mean the official NASCAR record book for the 69 season, which I
have. If Information Please chooses to put asterisks in, I guess that's
their business. But the NASCAR position has always been: the relief driver
"never happened". One finishing position, one trophy, one payout to the car
owner. BTW, this was the first race after Bristol had been rebuilt to the
higher banks it has today. David wasn't the only one who needed a relief
driver during that race. Bobby Isaac had relief from Bobby Allison and
Donnie Allison got help from Cale Yarborough.
