The NBS isn't as "cheap" as it used to be to compete in. Think back a few
years, when they went to a Busch engine package that isn't that far removed
from what the Cup cars use. Then and there, owners were saying that the NBS
would become heavily populated with Cup drivers, and/or NBS cars from Cup
teams, as they'd be the only ones capable of competing due to money. And
true to form, for about a season, car counts in the NBS were dangerously
low, and have risen very slowly ever since. My guess is that the owners that
spoke out then, really saw this coming. And actually, the "cost containment"
aspect of Busch went out the window in the 90s when they switched to V8
engines from V6s they were running at the time. The NBS has simply become a
self-fulfilling prophecy since becoming more (mechanically) like their Cup
counterparts IMO.
