Default Tire Limit - 02-23-2006 , 03:22 PM

Why is there a limit on the number of tires a team can use in a weekend? What
business is it of NASCAR's if a team wants to bring their car in every lap for
new tires?

Don't worry, I am not going to comment. Just curious.

The explanation a simple two word motorsports oxymoron: Cost Containment.

What he said. I think we may even have touched on it in the off season.

The Cup Series only has a limit on the number of tires that teams can use
during practice unless they have changed it this year. This is not a new
rule.

The Busch and the Truck Series have a limit of the number of tires that the
teams can use during the race-it's a cost saving measure and it actually is
a cost saving measure. If the Cup backed teams with money were to put new
tires on every time they came in, the teams without money would be forced to
in order to compete.

I believe I read that a set of four is around $1650.00.

Ya and with this new tire lease program they only get back 100.00 for each
tire used or new.

I thought only Busch had a tire limit. I didn't think there was any
limit in Cup series?

I thought.

I assumed he was talking about the NBS and CTS, since he didn't specifically
mention the Cup series. And my response was accurate IMO, in that the NBS
and CTS have tire limits in place as a form of cost containment.

The Cup series has a tire limit (as so far as retention) as a form of rules
to keep them from testing away from the 7 mandated tracks/tests. It isn't
yet working, but I think that's why NASCAR did it.
