Actually, it was made by Kyle about Darlington (it followed a telling
of the story about Darlington's odd shape being because Harold
Brasington didn't want to disturb the minnow pond just outside the
track - since Kyle doesn't like Darlington, he said he'd be just
as happy if the whole track was a fishing pond).

I knew he said it. But I also thought he included Richmond in it
too. I am probably mistaken tough. Age does that to one's memory.

The statement pretty much struck a chord with everyone in NASCAR,
and several other drivers used it to describe their least favorite
track. Altho it's hard to think of anyone disliking Richmond, I'm
sure there's someone who hates going there.

Not sure of the year, but pretty sure the race Kyle Petty(Kyle's first

win?) won when DE and DW took each other(and several others) out, was
the

Richard
Petty on the bulldozer ready to take the first cut through the track.
And,
I thought the old Richmond Fairgrounds Track was 5/8???

You are right, Richard was one of the folks on the bulldozer. I seem
to recall Kyle Petty saying that he hated the joint as a half mile.
I do believe that he made some comment that the best thing they could
do with the old half mile course was to fill it with water and stock
it with fish.

Here is a history of the track: http://www.rir.com/track_info/timeline/

At one point it was 5/8, but that was probably before it was subjected
to the standardized NASCAR measuring method. As I stated in another
thread about half mile tracks, any speedway can be measured by the
promoter his (or her) own way.

I'm still trying to find the tape.
I *did* find the tape of the Southern 500 marathon that Speedvision
did back in 99, though.
What a swing down memory lane *that* has been!
Eight pump jacks, 40 second "fast" pitstops, a shot of Donnie in the car
with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, the infield full of cars and not
motorhomes,...and Cale's *awesome* combover.

I'm still trying to find the tape.

Well, if it matters anymore, I found it.
It was <drum roll> Darlington. Spring 95.
It had just been resurfaced and a lot of the front runners had been
complaining that the place had gotten too damn fast.
(...after their wrecks of course)
(It probably didn't help that all three Bodine boys and Steve Kinser
were out there too)
Kyle had gotten into oil from Chuck Bown's car in turn 3 and
"packed 'er into the wall" late while runnning on the lead lap.
While being interviewed by Bill Weber, Kyle, seemingly in a great mood
and flashing that irrepressable Petty grin said,
"I hate this place, and I'll go on record,...I hate Bristol too, that's next
week....I've said it before, I think they should fill this place up with
water right to the retaining wall, put bass in it and have Pro Bass
tournaments. They could sell seats in them grandstands, and people
could sit and watch 'em fish all day. But I tell you what,
as bad as this place is, they could put a million fish in here and wouldn't
*nobody* catch any"
<raucous laughter from the gathered crowd, BP, and Ned>

The following week at Bristol Kyle got collected up in one of the early
melees, and was reminded of his "fishing" comments by Weber.
"Whaddya think of *this* place?" he straight-manned.
"This place ain't good enough for bass <mischievous grin>
Fill it with carp."

So I guess my "whining" comment was a bit off base.
