GOOD !

Why good? Does seeing people get hurt float your boat?

Paul, this is typical of the breed of fan that ESPN and televised racing
has
brought out. They don't even know about anything other than NASCAR and
don't want to. They throw beer bottles on the track when they don't get
what they want. It is really sad sometimes.

Like all those people I saw during one race (don't remember which one) who
were
throwing water bottles on the track. Those, to me, are ignorant rednecks.

While that kind of behavior is unfortunate, it seems to be the only way that
fans have left to voice their displeasure.

We now have green-white-checker finishes because fans showed their
displeasure with finishing under caution by littering the track on a couple
of occasions.

By what other means can fans effectively let Nascar know that they don't
like how Nascar does something?

That is weak.

And an unfortunate result that only encourages childish behaviour.

Acting like a petulant child is certainly not the way. How do you act at
work when you don't feel you are getting attention to a request? Go take a
crap on the bosses desk, or just throw a tantrum.

How about not attending races? That would have a two fold result. First,
NASCAR would certainly get the message, and second, there wouldn't be morons
at the track throwing their beer bottles onto the racing surface.

Call it what you want, it worked. And it hasn't happened since, so
apparently it didn't encourage further childishness.

At work I can go talk to my boss. Do you have Brian France's or Mike
Helton's phone numbers?

Talk about weak. So I shouldn't attend any more races because it might have
an anti-climactic ending?

Would you quit your job because they suppiled you with blue pens and you
wanted black?
(comparing attending a sporting event with employment is not a good
comparison, BTW)

I still say it is childish and dangerous.

Different deal. You can speak with your wallet. That will make the folks
stand up and take notice.

Go back and look at what you wrote. If you aren't enjoying the race, why
spend the money. And, it is racing. It just might have an "anti climactic"
ending. What happens when a football game is a rout? Do fans start
chucking beers at the players so the NFL can change the rules to tighten up
the game?

No, I would buy my own black pens and charge them on expenses. I wouldn't
start tossing my stapler at the boss, though. What happened at Talladega
and Daytona were nothing but immature tantrums, and the behaviour was
encouraged by NASCAR.

Okay, you get a ticket for speeding, and you aren't happy about it. Do you
bitch slap the cop?

One of the things that has really turned my off on NASCAR in the past few
years is the type of fan that has been attracted to it.

That was Gordon fans doing the throwing the year before last. I am not
making excuses - it's not all Jeff Gordon fans.

Or... not any Jeff Gordon fans. It was Earnhardt fans throwing beer
bottles
on the track in front of Gordon, and at his car after he beat Junior after
the restart.
Yes, Mike, but *after* that incident, there was another one where "Gordon"
fans threw their free "Pepsi" seat cushions onto the track. Was that
Richmond? I wanna say it was a short track regardless. So you're both right.
There was both an "Earnhardt fans" incident at Dega, but there was also a
"Gordon fans" incident later that same season.

sports in general. Maybe not the fan, but the behavior of the fan (and maybe
they are not separate). The "A----------- Hooooooole" chants and "<name>
SUCKS!" and other foul chants ... Gettin' to be too much foul behavior for me to
enjoy the game anymore. What's with that? *I* don't appreciate it and I sure
don't appreciate it with my kid there either.

Might be the same at nascar events, but with the roar of the engines you just
can't hear it.

Carey, the point I'm making is that Nascar doesn't listen to the fans, so,
right or wrong, the fans resorted to a spontaneous display of their
feelings.

An organized effort to boycott Nascar is unrealistic, and if I alone choose
not to go, Nascar doesn't care since someone else will buy the ticket. I
enjoy the races, but I, along with many others, want to see a race to the
finish. And those that had spent their money for tickets, travel, lodging,
etc. thought that finishing under caution sucked and expressed themselves in
the only way available to them at that moment.

Was it childish? Yes. Was it effective? Yes. And I am thankful that the
displeasure shown made a positive difference. And if Nascar doesn't
institute a more peaceful means for fans to voice themselves, it probably
will happen again.
